LAST TIME OUT | Kentucky Highlights
UVM nearly upset fourth-ranked Kentucky after drawing within three points in the final minute, but the Wildcats pulled out a 73-69 win on Sunday afternoon in Vermont's regular season opener. The Catamounts had four players record double digits.
Trae Bell-Haynes scored a team-high 16 points on 8-of-15 shooting.
Anthony Lamb followed with 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Drew Urquhart added 13 points after making 5-of-8 attempts from the floor and
Ernie Duncan posted 10 points after draining three triples.
MID-MAJOR POWER RANKINGS
After the strong showing in Lexington, the Catamounts remained at No. 3 in this week's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll. Vermont sits behind a pair of nationally ranked programs - No. 17 Gonzaga and No. 21 Saint Mary's (Calif.).
SCOUTING BRADLEY
The Braves enter the weekend with an unblemished 2-0 mark after a 68-53 win over IUPUI on Saturday, then beat Delaware 61-53 on Tuesday. Bradley was picked seventh in the Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. Sophomore Darrell Brown was selected to the Preseason All-MVC Team after netting 12.6 points per game as a freshman, the highest scoring average by a MVC true freshman since Creighton's Doug McDermott in 2010-11. The Braves have three players averaging double figures through the first two games – sophomore Nate Kennell (12.5 ppg), senior Donte Thomas (11.0 ppg), and Brown (10.5 ppg).
SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA
The Chanticleers come into the tournament with an even 1-1 record. Coastal Carolina reached the win column with a 102-50 rout of Piedmont International last Friday before falling to Lamar 66-60 on Tuesday. Coming into the season, CCU was tabbed seventh in the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll and landed two Preseason All-Sun Belt Team selections – seniors Jaylen Shaw and Demario Beck. Shaw has averaged a team-high 15.5 points per game this year and he has made 60.0% (12-for-20) of his attempts from the floor. Juniors Ajay Sanders (10.5 ppg) and Matt Lindsey (10.0 ppg) have also averaged double figures through the first two games.
SCOUTING TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO
The Roadrunners rolled to a 92-59 win over East Central on Sunday in their regular season opener. Freshman Keaton Wallace posted a game-high 22 points in his collegiate debut and collected Conference-USA Freshman of the Week honors on Monday. The rookie drained six three-pointers and recorded a pair of blocks and steals in the victory. UTSA used its depth to its advantage as George Willborn III and Jhivvan Jackson added 14 points each off the bench. Byron Frohnen and Adrian Rodriguez followed with 10 points apiece to round out five players in double digits.
VERMONT VS. THE TOURNAMENT FIELD
The Catamounts have faced two of the seven other teams in this weekend's tournament – Iona and James Madison. UVM is 3-5 all-time against Iona but has won three out of the last five matchups dating back to 2004. The last meeting was back on Dec. 17, 2011 when the Gaels squeaked out a 73-72 win at Patrick Gym. In the only contest against JMU, the Cats lost 82-65 back on Dec. 5, 1981.
