LAST TIME OUT | Maine-Fort Kent Highlights
UVM headed into the Thanksgiving holiday break on a four-game winning streak after beating Maine-Fort Kent 90-54 in the regular season home opener on Wednesday night. Vermont was led by a pair of players making their Catamount debuts.
Samuel Dingba scored 13 points and tallied six rebounds in his first taste of action since transferring from Quinnipiac prior to last season. Dingba was 5-of-8 from the floor and the redshirt junior was tenacious on the offensive glass with four boards. Redshirt freshman and homegrown
Ben Shungu added 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting with five rebounds and two assists.
Anthony Lamb matched Shungu with 11 points. The sophomore also recorded seven rebounds and swatted away two shots.
Payton Henson was the fourth Catamount in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds.
FIRST OF FIVE
The Catamounts will spend their next five games on the road. After Saturday's tilt at Yale, the Cats will head to Richmond on Wednesday (Nov. 29), Bucknell on Saturday, Dec. 2, Marquette on Monday, Dec. 5, and Northeastern on Saturday, Dec. 9.
GETTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT
The Green and Gold are off to their second straight 4-1 start under head coach
John Becker and 13th overall since 1960. The Cats started 4-1 last year and again in 2012-13 under Becker. In five out of the last seven 4-1 starts, UVM has gone onto win the sixth game of the year.
400-ASSIST CLUB
After dishing out four assists against UMFK,
Trae Bell-Haynes became the ninth Catamount to reach the 400-career assist mark and the first since the program's all-time leading distributor Brian Voelkel '14. The Toronto, Ontario native leads active America East players and his 402 career assists are 109 assists more than UMass Lowell's Jahad Thomas in second place.
KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES
Vermont will be playing a second member of the Jones family this weekend. Yale head coach, James Jones, is the older brother of Boston University head coach Joe Jones. The Catamounts won a preseason game against the Terriers 87-66 at Patrick Gym on Oct. 27 to benefit hurricane relief efforts.
SCOUTING YALE
The Bulldogs were picked second in the Ivy League Preseason Coaches' Poll despite receiving more first-place vote (8) than preseason favorite Harvard (6). Yale comes into the weekend with an even 3-3 record after clipping Alcorn State 87-73 in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic on Wednesday. The Bulldogs have the top scoring offense (81.5 ppg) and has gathered the most offensive rebounds (11.0 orpg) in the Ivy League. Sophomore guard Miye Oni ranks in the top-10 on the Ivy League's scoring chart (13.8 ppg) and rebounding list (5.6 rpg). Junior forward Blake Reynolds follows with 10.7 points per game, which sits 18th overall in the conference. Freshman forward Paul Atkinson has canned 64.5% of his attempts from the floor this year to lead all Ivy League players.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Catamounts own a slight edge over the Bulldogs in the all-time series with a 15-13 record. Vermont snapped a small two-game skid against Yale last year thanks to a game-winning shot by
Ernie Duncan in the final seconds for a 67-65 victory at Patrick Gym. UVM has reached the win column in six out of the last nine meetings.
