Four of those UVM athletes were individual champions at the 2017 America East Championships at the University of New Hampshire earlier this month. Simon and Weisbecker helped Vermont sweep the pole vault, Weider won his third straight men's long jump title, and Moore secured a victory in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase.
Kaplan was an All-Conference performer for the Catamounts with her second place finish in the women's 10,000-meter run. She was also presented with the America East Elite 17 Award, given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies academic excellence, with a perfect 4.00 GPA as an exercise and movement science major.
To be eligible for All-Academic status, student-athletes must have sophomore athletic eligibility, attain a 3.30 minimum GPA, and be a contributor on their team. The squad is voted on by a committee made up of America East student-athlete support and athletic communications administrators as well as faculty athletic representatives.
Weider and Simon will compete in the NCAA East Preliminary Round this week at the University of Kentucky. Weider jumps on Thursday (May 25) at 4:30 p.m., while Simon vaults at 4:30 p.m. on Friday (May 26). The top-12 competitors in each event will advance to the 2017 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon in early June.
