"On behalf of our program, I would like to extend congratulations to Torrey Mitchell and his family for this honor," head coach
Kevin Sneddon said. "We wish him much success during the Spengler Cup!"
The Spengler Cup is an annual invitational tournament held in Davos, Switzerland. Carl Spengler founded the tournament in 1923 following the First World War. Team Canada has won the last three Spengler Cups and are tied with HC Davos for the most tournament victories with 15.
Mitchell enjoyed a three-year Catamount career from 2004-07, and racked up 105 points in 115 career games. He captained the team in his final season at UVM in 2006-07. Mitchell helped the Catamounts to three winning seasons early in the Sneddon era.
The 2004 San Jose Sharks fourth round pick went on to play 666 career NHL games with five teams over 11 seasons and has played over 800 professional games since leaving UVM. Mitchell deferred his induction into the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame last fall due to his professional career.
Mitchell and Team Canada will face HC Davos from the Swiss National League in the first round on Wednesday (Dec. 26). Team Canada will play on Friday (Dec. 28) with an opening victory or on Thursday (Dec. 27) with a loss in the first game. A full schedule can be found by clicking
