BOSTON, Mass. – University of Vermont senior
Pearl Abiti was crowned America East champion in the pentathlon in day one of competition at the 2018 America East Indoor Championships.
Through the first day of competition, the Vermont women are in fourth place with 28 points, trailing Albany, Binghamton, and New Hampshire in that order. The Vermont men are in eighth place through one day of competition with 8.5 points.

Abiti took fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.23s and fifth in the high jump with a distance of 5-2.50 (1.59m) to earn a combined 1,586 points in the pentathlon.
She posted a distance of 17-9.00 (5.41m) to finish first in the long jump and earned 674 points after taking third in the shot put. She closed the event taking fifth in the 800m run, earning a total of 3,433 points and top-spot in the event.
Andy Chess (4.35m, 14-3.25) took eighth to score for the Catamounts in the pole vault. On the women's side,
Ali Attenasio took fourth with a height of 10-11.75 (3.35m),
Marina Cannon took fifth with a height of 10-6.00 (3.20m), and
Grace Murphy took sixth with a height of 10-6.00 (3.20m) to earn points for Vermont.
Anya Gorodentsev posted a distance of 16-2.5 (4.94m) in the long jump to finish ninth, narrowly missing the top-8 scoring finishes.
In the women's 5,000m run,
Samantha Sayer took seventh to score and posted an ECAC/IC4A qualifying time of 17:26.33.
Maggie Mahoney (18:24.07) took 15th and
Margaret Gish finished 17th in the race.
In the men's 5,000m run,
Jack Carmody (15:04.95),
Matt Hynes (15:10.28),
Will Hopkins (15:13.92),
Gavin Schmeck (15:18.86), and Isaac Grosner competed for UVM.
Justin Liechty and
Dan DeBlieck both qualified for the 400m dash finals in tomorrow's competition. Liechty (48.78s) finished third while DeBlieck (49.05s) took sixth.
Ahmed Noor (50.71) and
Will Juniper (50.76) also ran for the Catamounts.
Julia Nugent took 17th in the women's 400m dash with a time of 1:00.27.
DeBlieck missed the qualifying mark by two-hundredths of a second in the 60m hurdles after taking ninth with a time of 8.59s.
James Eyler (8.74) finished 14th and
DJ Snide (8.78s) took 16th. Snide also finished 16th in the 60m dash with a time of 7.29s.
In the 500m dash,
Alex May Curtis took 10th with a time of 1:16.96 while
Jessica Cartier took 17th. On the men's side,
Walker Horton posted a time of 1:07.11 to take 13th and
Cam McLaughlin finished right behind with a time of 1:07.33 to take 18th.
The men's and women's Distance Medley Relays concluded Friday's competition. The men's DMR team of
Chris Gish,
Allen Vance,
Aaron Lucci, and Liechty posted a time of 10:01.19 to finish second behind only Binghamton.
The women's DMR team of
Caroline O'Shea,
Claudia Sacks,
Sunny Nagpaul, and Curtis finished fifth after posting a time of 12:09.57.
Vermont will continue competition at the 2018 America East Indoor Championships tomorrow. The day is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon.
