COACH'S QUOTE
We were quite careless with the ball at times today, resulting in needless turnovers" head coach
Kate Pfeifer said. "I would have liked to see more possession and poise over the ball. We were forced to make a couple of big defensive saves, one on a stroke. When we scored with two minutes in regulation, we needed to carry that momentum forward. Instead, Maine did well to respond."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After trading shots on goal in the opening minutes, Maine sophomore Chloe Walton broke the scoreless deadlock with a 10th minute goal. Riley Field assisted on the tally.
- Peppe Haantjes recorded a defensive save in the 30th minute to keep the Catamounts within a goal at the half.
- Sierra Espeland (7 saves) made the lone save of the third quarter following a Maine corner.
- Espeland kept the Cats in the game again in the 54th minute, tallying a penalty stroke save against Kelsey Mehuren.
- Phillips came into the game with less than two minutes to play in the fourth quarter and buried a penalty stroke to tie the game at 1-1. However, Maine re-took the lead less than a minute later as Davis tallied the game-winning goal off a Black Bear corner.
GAME NOTES
- Maine held an 18-4 advantage in shots and an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Black Bears also had a 4-1 edge in penalty corners.
- Peppe Haantjes recorded her first career defensive save late in the first half. She joins Haley Buffenbarger, Pleun Haantjes, and Clare Sheahan as active Catamounts with a defensive save.
