COACH'S QUOTE
"It was nice to see contributions from a number of different players today," head coach
Kate Pfeifer said. "I thought the Merrimack goalie played an exceptional game, and I'm glad we were able to convert on a record number of shots we created today."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Laura Zavrl scored her first career goal in the 10th minute on Vermont's third consecutive shot on target. Sydney Melfi and Clodagh Ferry fired the initial pair of shots on goal, but it took Zavrl's third effort to beat Merrimack goalie Katharina Ohmen (14 saves). Sophia Cheever assisted on the goal.
- Senior Rebekah Silver added her first goal of the season in the 26th minute as she tipped a pass from Pleun Haantjes past Ohmen.
- In the 29th minute, freshman Haley Buffenbarger found a rebound in the circle and slotted the ball past Ohmen for her first career collegiate goal.
- Vermont senior Rachel Phillips ripped a shot past Ohmen off a penalty corner for her first goal of the season. The Catamounts broke through with the special teams goal on their 11th penalty corner opportunity of the afternoon.
- Merrimack's Juliane Ohmen tallied the Warriors' lone goal in the 57th minute to avoid the shutout.
GAME NOTES
- Vermont held a 26-5 advantage in shots and an 18-4 advantage in shots on goal. UVM also held an 11-3 edge in penalty corners.
- Freshman Rosie Ceisler and sophomore Perry Willett made their Catamount debuts this afternoon.
- Vermont registers four different goal scorers in a single game for the first time since UVM's 5-2 win over Dartmouth in 2017. In that game: Melfi, Jackie Gillen '19, Lauren Tucker '19, and Landon Warren '19 found the back of the net.
- Ferry finished the afternoon with a game-high seven shots and a game-high five shots on goal. Her best chance came early in the third quarter, but Ohmen made a spectacular save.
- With the victory, the Cats Win, Community Wins campaign and Vermont Mutual Insurance Group will donate $100 to Make-A-Wish Vermont; bringing this year's total to 62 wins and $6,200. Â
