BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Vermont men's soccer announced its three individual team awards on Thursday. The Catamounts honored three seniors –
Lucas Shaw,
Ívar Örn Árnason, and
Jon Arnar Barðdal.
Shaw is this year's winner of the Donoson Fitzgerald Award. Inaugurated in 1997, the Donoson Fitzgerald Award is based on a Catamount who displayed the most perseverance, integrity and sportsmanship. Shaw, a co-captain this season, saw action in eight matches as a reserve forward and scored his first collegiate goal against Iona.
Árnason was selected as the Hal Greig Award winner. The award is given to the student-athlete who in the opinion of his teammates, through his desire, hustle and love of the game, has done the most for the program. The defender from Akureyri, Iceland was an America East All-Conference First Team pick and landed on the United Soccer Coaches All-Northeast First Team. He ranked second on the team with six goals and was among the league leaders in scoring.
Barðdal was voted Most Valuable Player. This award is an honor bestowed upon an individual as the best performing player on the team this season. He had the second-highest point total (15) on the team and seventh in the conference. He produced a five-game point streak and was named to the America East All-Conference First Team. Historically, he finished his collegiate career with the third-most assists (20) on the school's all-time list.
Vermont posted an 11-6-1 overall record in 2019 and clinched a share of the America East regular season title. The Cats won at least 10 games for the fifth straight year and earned their 10th consecutive conference tournament berth.
