COACH'S QUOTE
"It was another great defensive effort by our guys today," said Cioffi Men's Basketball Head Coach
John Becker. "It took us a little while to get going but we were able to figure it out. Maine is a good defensive team but now the biggest challenge is coming back tomorrow and playing with the same edge."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The start of the game was a defensive battle. Maine scored the first six points of the day but UVM answered with seven straight points for a 7-6 lead by the first media timeout. The Cats stretched their run to 17-4 for a 17-10 advantage with seven minutes left in the period.
- Vermont kept its foot on the gas pedal and scored 14 of the game's next 16 points. The Green and Gold went into the locker room with a 31-12 lead. UVM's defense held Maine to six field goals (6-for-28) and zero triples (0-for-9) in the opening frame.
- The Catamounts opened the second half with nine straight points and pushed the margin to 30-plus.
- Near the 12-minute media timeout, the Black Bears put together a mini 9-2 run and whittled UVM's lead down to 46-22.
- Vermont responded by scoring 14 of the game's last 22 points for the final margin of victory.
