McPHERSON NAMED HEA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
First-Year goaltender
Jessie McPherson was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday morning after a 17-save shutout in her collegiate debut last Friday. In Vermont's 4-0 win over Holy Cross McPherson became the first Vermont freshman to post a shutout win in her collegiate debut since Molly Depew defeated Union on October 25, 2014.
ALL-STAR FORM CONTINUES FOR POULIN-LABELLE
Last season junior defenseman
Maude Poulin-Labelle became the sixth Catamount in program history to be named a Hockey East All-Star. This season she has picked up right where she left off, she leads the team in scoring with five points on five helpers and is a team-best +7. She is tied for 11th in the NCAA averaging 1.25 points-per game, and third amongst all NCAA defenseman. She is also the team leader in shots on goal with 16.
SCORING ALL OVER
In just four games played the Catamounts have had 12 players score a goal. They are tied with New Hampshire (10 GP) and Providence College (8 GP) for the most individual goal scorers in Hockey East this season.
THREE GOALIES ARE BETTER THAN ONE
With Blanka Škodová's 15-save win over Holy Cross last Saturday the Catamounts became just the second team this season to have a win from three different starters. Škodová,
Jessie McPherson and
Natalie Ferenc have each posted a "W" for the Catamounts this season. Hockey East foe Boston College is the other team with wins from three goaltenders.
CATAMOUNTS PENALTY KILL UNBLEMISHED
Vermont is one of six teams this season (Mercyhurst, Minnesota, Ohio State, Quinnipiac, and Wisconsin) to not give up a power play goal. The Catamounts are a perfect 17-for-17 shorthanded this season.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Hockey East finalists from a year ago the Huskies were selected by the league coaches to finish fourth this season. UConn is off to a 3-3-1 start but due to postponed games they will be seeing their first game action since December 19, a 5-0 win at Merrimack.
On December 21 first-year forward Jada Habisch was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week after scoring a hat trick against the Warriors. She was the first freshman to score three in a game for UConn since 2005. Senior forward Savannah Bouzide leads the team in scoring with five goals. She is tied for the team lead in points, with seven, with classmate Viki Harkness.
First-Year goaltender Tia Chan has made the majority of the starts for the Huskies. She is 2-1-1 on the season with a .954 save percentage and 1.25 goals-against average.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Vermont and UConn square off for the 46th and 47th time in series history this weekend. The Cats are 11-28-6 overall and have a 3-4-3 mark in the last 10 meetings. Last season in Storrs the teams skated to a 2-2 draw on November 15, 2019.
SHOOTOUTS COME TO HOCKEY EAST
New this season in Hockey East games that are tied following a five minute three-on-three overtime will got to a shootout to decide the extra point in the league standings. A regulation league win is now worth three points, and overtime or shootout win is worth two points.
