COACH'S QUOTE
"Hard lessons were learned tonight about how hard it is to win games," Head Coach
Todd Woodcroft said. "We are not a team who can afford to take segments of the game off. Tonight, mental errors had serious consequences. Up 3-0 we cannot take a major penalty – our PP while having great opportunities, has to produce. Our penalty kill has to have more urgency. On the flip side, for a majority of the game, we were in full control. Our five-on-five game continues to show signs of great progress and I am hopeful that the lessons learned tonight will pay dividends down the road."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vermont opened the scoring 1:52 into the contest on the power play. Joe Leahy one-timed a shot from the point that was knocked down in traffic in front of PC's Jaxson Stauber. William Lemay gathered the loose puck spun and centered it towards the net. Ray Vitolins was in the right spot at the right time and put it home for his first goal of the season.
- UVM doubled its advantaged 2:11 later on a great effort from Philip Lagunov. In transition Lagunov put a puck towards the net that missed but the rebound bounced off the boards right in front and he put it past Stauber for his team-leading fifth of the season. Cody Schivaon and Jacques Bouquot earned assists on the tally.
- Vermont made it 3-0 with 24 seconds left in the first period. Simon Jellus redirected a Cory Babichuk point shot from the slot for his fourth goal of the season. Will Zapernick earned the secondary assist.
- 4:54 into the second frame UVM was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for boarding. On the ensuing power play the Friars struck three times to tie the game. Patrick Moynihan scored twice and Max Crozier added another.
- Midway through the second period the Catamounts had a full two minutes with a five-on-three advantage. Vermont managed several great chances but Stauber made five saves to keep the game tied at three.
- With six minutes left in regulation the Friars Max Crozier found Monds behind the Vermont defense with a stretch pass. Monds broke in alone on UVM's Tyler Harmon, despite pressure from behind Monds was able to sneak a shot past Harmon for his third goal of the season.
- With 1:43 left in regulation UVM called its timeout and pulled Harmon looking for an equalizer. The Catamounts had four shots in the 103 seconds but Stauber turned them all aside to earn his ninth win of the season.
