SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Oakland enters the Gulf Coast Showcase having split its last two games with an 80-59 victory over Toledo (Nov. 17) and an 86-59 loss at No. 14 Alabama. The Golden Grizzlies are led by Jamal Cain, a transfer from Marquette, who has averaged a double-double with 22.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. The forward dropped 31 points the other night at Alabama. Trey Townsend (10.3 ppg) and Jalen Moore (10.0 ppg) also average double figures. Oakland was picked to finish sixth in the Horizon League at the start of the season.

THE REST OF THE FIELD
Six other teams join the Catamounts and Grizzlies at the Gulf Coast Showcase. On Tuesday, Vermont will face Rice or Evansville. On the other side of the bracket are Akron, Fordham, Appalachian State, and Delaware. Vermont and Oakland are the only teams ranked inside the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25.
Â
CATS IN THE SHOWCASE
Vermont competes in the Gulf Coast Showcase for the second time in program history. The Catamounts finished second in 2016 after suffering a 72-71 buzzer-beating loss to Houston. UVM beat Wofford 60-59 in the first game of the tournament, followed by Hofstra (W, 87-73) to get into the title game.
Â
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
Vermont is one of the best teams in the country at taking care of the ball, averaging 7.8 turnovers per game. Only two teams in the country average fewer turnovers – New Hampshire (6.3) and No. 5 Villanova (7.0). The Catamounts only turned the ball over five times in Friday's 61-53 win over Yale.
