MEN'S HOCKEY NOTEBOOK
Vermont men's hockey will face the seven-seed UMass Lowell River Hawks in the Opening Round of the Hockey East Tournament Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on NESN from the Tsongas Center with Tyler Murray and Jim Connelly on the call. The game will also be streamed live for free on CBS CollegeSportsLive. The voice of the Catamounts, Maura Sheridan, will also broadcast the action live on WVMT (FM 96.3 / AM 620).

THOMAS HAS FOND MEMORIES OF FIRST ROUND ACTION
Senior defenseman
Cory Thomas scored his first career goal in overtime in the Catamounts last postseason win on March 2, 2018. Thomas scored 12 seconds into overtime to defeat UMass 4-3 in game two of the Hockey East Opening Round.
SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS
Last weekend the River Hawks skated to a 3-3 tie with No. 10 Boston University on Senior Night at the Tsongas Center. Senior forward Charlie Levesque scored twice for the River Hawks in the contest.
Sophomore forward and Los Angeles Kings seventh round draft pick Andre Lee leads the team in scoring with seven goals. He also has five assists for 12 points on the year. He had an assist in UML's 3-2 win over Vermont on February 27.
Junior goaltender Owen Savory has started six of the last seven games in net for the River Hawks including both contests at Vermont. He gave up three goals on 29 shots in the weekend series at Gutterson Fieldhouse at the end of February.
UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin has a 20-11 record in tournament games, the second-highest win total among active head coaches in the league. The River Hawks have won three of the last seven Hockey East Championships.
The River Hawks current three game unbeaten streak is the second-longest in Hockey East entering the postseason. UMass is 4-0-3 in its last seven games to maintain the longest streak in the conference and third longest in the NCAA.
SERIES HISTORY
The Catamounts are 16-34-8 all-time against the River Hawks and 6-16-3 on the road facing UML. The River Hawks are 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings with the Catamounts.
The River Hawks are 5-1 all-time against the Catamounts in the postseason. The two teams have met twice before in the Hockey East Quarterfinals with UML prevailing in two games from the Gut in 2009 and three games at the Tsongas Center in 2014. In each of those instances UVM advanced to the NCAA Tournament as an at-large entry. In 2009 the Catamounts reached the Frozen Four for the second time in program history. In their most recent playoff matchup UML defeated the Catamounts 4-1 at TD Garden in the 2015 Hockey East Semifinals.
CATAMOUNTS IN THE HEA OPENING ROUND
From 2014-2018 the Catamounts played in the Hockey East Opening Round five straight years, they advanced four times defeating Maine (2015, 2017), UMass (2014), and UConn (2016). UVM is 8-4 all-time in the opening round and boasts a 3-2 road mark after sweeping UConn in 2016.
CATAMOUNTS ON WEDNESDAYS
Vermont has played 111 games on Wednesday in program history. UVM's all-time mark on Wednesday is 61-48-2. UVM last saw action on Wednesday in the 2019-20 regular season finale at UMass (3/5/20), a 1-0 loss.
PLAYING EXTRA TIME
In the postseason, all ties are decided by continuous 20-minute overtime periods. UVM is 8-10 all-time in playoff overtime. Their last extra session win came in a 4-3 win over UMass on March 2, 2018 (Game 2), with
Cory Thomas striking 12 seconds in. Their last loss came in the same series with a 3-2 UMass win in Game 1 on March 1, 2018.
