14th-Ranked Catamounts Head to Holy Cross for Hockey East Opener

WOMEN'S HOCKEY NOTEBOOK
After a weekend sweep of RIT at Gutterson Fieldhouse the Catamounts begin conference play this weekend as they travel to Worcester to face Holy Cross in Hockey East action. The teams' will faceoff at 1 p.m. on Saturday and then again at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The action will be streamed live on ESPN+.

McCOOL NAMED HEA PLAYER OF THE WEEK AND TD BANK STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
McCool led the way for the 14th ranked Catamounts last weekend as they swept a series with RIT by identical 5-2 scores. McCool had two assists on Friday night and two goals and an assist on Saturday night. She was honored as Hockey East Player of the Week for the second time in her career and was also named UVM Athletics' TD Bank Student-Athlete of the Week.
 
Entering the weekend, she is the top scorer among Hockey East skaters with five points and is 12th nationally. Her 2.5 points-per-game is ranked second in the NCAA behind Wisconsin's Lacey Eden.
 
CATAMOUNTS AND LEAGUE OPENERS
Vermont is 2-2-1 in its last five Hockey East openers, but is 2-0-1 over the last three seasons. The Catamounts haven't opened league play on the road since October 1, 2017 at Providence, a 6-2 loss.
 
Last season Vermont opened conference play hosting Holy Cross on October 22 in a 4-2 win. Corinne McCool had a goal and an assist as UVM scored three second period goals in 6:18 of game action to claim the win.
 
CATAMOUNTS RANKED ONCE AGAIN
After the Catamounts were ranked in the preseason poll in women's hockey for the first time in program history and they continue to be ranked this week. UVM checks in at No. 14 in the DCU/USCHO poll and is 15th in the USA Today/USA Hockey poll.
 
TOP POWER PLAY IN THE COUNTRY
Currently at a 75% success rate the Catamounts have the best power play in Division I. They were three-for-four against RIT last weekend and in one instance they scored in just seven seconds off a won faceoff. Vermont's 14.1 shooting percentage (even strength & PP) is ranked second in the NCAA.
 
LONG CHANGE, LONG PERIOD
The Catamounts have been most effective this season during the second period, when both teams have the long change. UVM has outscored its opponents 5-1 in the second and outshot teams 25-8.
 
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS
Holy Cross is 1-1-0 this season after splitting a home series with Union last weekend. The Crusaders defeated the Dutchwomen 4-3 on Friday night and fell 3-1 on Saturday. First year Alexia Moreau had two goals Friday and added another on Saturday. She was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week for her efforts. Junior forward Bryn Saarela also had three points on the weekend, all assists.
 
Holy Cross goaltenders Brooke Loranger (.939 Sv %) and Madison Beck (.921 Sv%) split the crease last weekend.
 
SERIES HISTORY
The Catamounts lead the all-time series with the Crusaders 9-2-1. Last season the Catamounts swept Holy Cross in all three meetings between the two teams. In their last meeting UVM set a program record for goals in a 9-0 win at the Hart Center Rink on January 18. UVM has won the last five contests between the two teams by a combined score of 26-4. UVM won the first official meeting 2-0 in 2001 as D-III programs.

VERMONT SELECTED SECOND IN HOCKEY EAST PRESEASON POLL
The Catamounts received their highest-ever ranking in the Hockey East Coaches' Preseason Poll. After finishing in second last season with a conference mark of 18-7-2 UVM was selected by the coaches to place second again this year. The reigning five-time defending champion Northeastern was picked first. The Catamounts were the only team in Hockey East last season to defeat the Huskies at Matthews Arena in league play.
 
CZECH-MATES EARN BRONZE
Vermont forwards Tynka Pátková & Natálie Mlynková earned bronze medals at the 2022 IIHF Women's World Championships in Denmark last month. Czechia defeated Switzerland 4-2 in the bronze medal game behind two goals from Mlynková. It was Czechia's first-ever medal on the women's side. Former Catamount Blanka Skodova was also a member of the team.
 
There were three other current Catamounts in the tournament patrolling the blueline. First year Krista Parkkonen (Finland) made her World Championships debut while Sofie Skott (Denmark) and Sini Karjalainen (Finland) competed in their second World Championship at the senior level.
