Game Notes: Vermont | Iona
SCOUTING THE GAELS
The Gaels were picked No. 1 in the MAAC Preseason Poll after last year's regular season title. Iona lost MAAC Player of the Year, Tyson Jolly, but return All-MAAC preseason player Nelly Junior Joseph for his junior season. Jolly averaged 13 points and 8.2 rebounds last season, and has 15.0 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game to start the season. A 6-9 rim protector, Joseph has averaged 3.5 blocks per game through the first two games. Quinn Slazinski has a team-high 18-points per game. Iona opened its season with a 78-50 win against Pennsylvania on Nov. 7, but suffered a loss in its most recent outing at Hofstra (L, 83-78).
INSIDE THE SERIES
Vermont and Iona meet for the ninth time in series history and the second time under Cioffi Men's Basketball Head Coach
John Becker. The Cats and Gaels last met in Becker's first season as bench boss, with Iona taking a 73-72 victory at Patrick Gym. Four McGlynn scored a game-high 19 points, along with 14-point outings from Luke Apfeld and Matt Glass.
CATS AT THE MOHEGAN
The Catamounts will be playing at Mohegan Sun Arena for the seventh time in program history. Vermont has a 3-3 mark at the Mohegan with wins over Central Connecticut, Marist, and Niagara. UVM is 2-1 against MAAC opponents in Uncasville. The Catamounts last played at Mohegan Sun Arena in 2019, when they finished in second place at the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-off.
NON-CONFERENCE GRIND
Vermont's strength of schedule is currently ranked No. 57 by ESPN through the first four games of the season. The Catamounts' schedule is ranked 43 spots higher than the next closest America East school. Vermont has faced three straight NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago, and two top-60 teams rated by KenPom. The Cats will face three more tournament teams as the non-conference season continues.
THE LONGTIME CATS
Only three Catamounts have been with the program for more than two seasons:
Robin Duncan,
Aaron Deloney, and
Nick Fiorillo. The UVM trio has combined for only 60 career starts, with Duncan owning 50 of those starts.
LOGGING MILES
Vermont enters the fourth stop of an eight-game stretch away from Patrick Gym. The Catamounts will log over 8,400 miles in the month of November.
