ELEVATED CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS UNDER COACH COURNOYER
In his 22nd season with the Catamounts Head CoachÂ
Gerry Cournoyer has helped the program reach new heights in America East. Prior to his arrival the UVM women had never finished higher than fourth overall. They have finished third in nine straight seasons now. UVM placed third last year with 613.5 points, they finished just eight points behind second place UMBC. It was the closest Vermont has ever come to second at the conference meet. Previously the closest was 44 points off of second place in 2014.
ALL-CONFERENCE RETURNERS FOR THE CATAMOUNTS
The Catamounts return three swimmers who earned All-Conference honors last April at the 2021 Championships hosted by NJIT.
Cailin Campbell (200 IM),
Kira Parker (50 Free, 100 Back, 100 Free) and
Mina Poppas (500 Free, 200 Free) earned the honors for UVM last year. Parker was seventh amongst the entire meet individually collecting 50 team points. Poppas was tied for eighth with 48 points.
The top three finishers in each individual event – as well as members of the first-place relay teams – all earn all-conference honors.Â
CATAMOUNTS LOOKING FOR FIRST-TIME WINNERS
Amongst the championship events there are six that UVM has never produced a Conference Champion in. UVM still seeks its first win in the 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Fly, 100 Back, 100 Breast and the 200 IM. Last spring
Katie Rivers '21 became the first-ever UVMer to win the 400 IM.
HOUSE AND PARKER LEAD THE CATAMOUNTS
Senior
Kira Parker and first year
Jackie House led the Catamounts this season each winning 10 individual events. During her standout first season House win the 100 free four times and the 500 free three times. Parker won the 100 back five times and the 50 free three times. House was named America East Swimmer of the Week on October 6 while Parker picked up the honor on January 25.
STRONG INVITATIONAL IN NOVEMBER BODES WELL FOR THIS WEEK
In late November the Catamounts tied for first place at the 2021 Harold Andersen Invitational hosted by URI. The Catamounts came from 17 points behind on the final day to tie with the host URI. It was the Catamounts first pre-Thanksgiving invitational title since winning the Terrier Invitational in 2013. Vermont defeated conference foes Binghamton (By 139.5 points) and Maine (By 568 points) at the Invite.
