BURLINGTON, Vt. – Two first period power play tallies helped No. 10 UMass establish an early lead they wouldn't relinquish in a 5-1 win Friday night in Hockey East action from Gutterson Fieldhouse. Friday was the Catamounts annual Rally Around Mental Health game presented by Inspired Closets.

COACH'S QUOTE
"Sometimes you are the teacher sometimes you are the student," said Head Coach
Todd Woodcroft. "Today we got into early penalty trouble and paid for it dearly. A 5v3 penalty goal against and then another right after. We go down 2-0 against the national champs and then are in a hole for the rest of the game, not much positive today to talk about. Tomorrow we have to be better and have to stay out of the box."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With a five-on-three power play in the first period the Minutemen scored twice to take control of the contest. Scott Morrow scored his 11th of the season with a fortunate bounce off a UVM defender and Matthew Keessel added his fifth of the season 27 seconds later.
- Reed Lebster made it a three-goal lead for the Minutemen with 3:23 left in the first period.
- 7:48 into the middle frame Oliver MacDonald beat UVM's Gabe Carriere just as a UMass power play was expiring for his second goal of the season. Following UMass' fourth goal UVM switched goaltender with Cole Hudson coming in.
- 3:20 later Hockey East's leading scorer Bobby Trivigno made it 5-0 on an odd-man rush.
- Former Minutemen forward Philip Lagunov got UVM on the board midway through the third period with his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Lagunov entered the zone with speed after a pass from Jacques Bouquot and split the UMass defense before firing a wrist shot off the crossbar and in. Andrew Lucas earned the secondary assist on the goal.
