Swimming and Diving Earns Impressive Victory over Rhode Island on Senior Day

BURLINGTON, VT – Vermont cruised to a 171-126 victory over Rhode Island Saturday morning at Forbush Natatorium winning every individual swimming event and splitting the two relays in their annual Senior Day Presented by The Alumni Association. With the victory the Catamounts improve to 7-3 (3-1 AE) while with the defeat the Rams fall to 5-5 (0-1 A-10) on the season.

"I am very pleased with our team performance today, we competed really well," said Head Coach Gerry Cournoyer. "It was great to get to celebrate this day with our seniors and honor them. I am looking forward to competing at the America East Championships."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Catamounts got off to a hot start with the combination of Autumn Bullinger, Natalie Schlemmer, senior Mina Poppas and Hally Laney winning the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:56.98, which was almost three seconds ahead of the next team.
  • Ella Church started the individual success off for Vermont earning first in the 1000 freestyle in dominating fashion finishing in 10:30.71, almost 15 seconds ahead of the field. Emily Rocco finished in third in a time of 10:54.46 to earn the Catamounts more points.
  • UVM took first and third in the 200 freestyle with Jackie House earning another victory on the season finishing in 1:54.57, while Emily Rygula finished in third with a time of 2:00.59.
  • In the 100 backstroke Vermont claimed the top two spots with first year Emma Wainwright taking first with a time of 1:00.22 and teammate Alexis Torykian came in right on her heels at 1:00.29. Wainwright continued her hot day with another victory in the 200 backstroke finishing in 2:09.08. Senior Beth Hartog came in second registering a time of 2:11.40.
  • Natalie Schlemmer continued her first year in Catamount Country earning another victory in the 100 breaststroke finishing in a time of 1:07.65. Schlemmer also took home first in the 200 breaststroke to make it a sweep finishing in 2:25.18 and fellow first year Lilly Acker finished in third coming in at 2:28.20.
  • Laney picked up her first individual victory of the day with a time of 2:09.15, almost three seconds ahead of the next closest swimmer, to win the 200 butterfly. Laney also took home first in the 100 butterfly finishing in 58.34 while her teammate Kara Campbell came in third with a time of 1:00.89. Laney earned a third victory in the 200 IM finishing in 2:12.75.
  • Chloe Smith garnered two fourth place finishes earning the Catamounts two points in the one-meter dive with a score of 214.73 and two points in the three-meter dive with a score of 220.95.
  • Poppas also earned an individual victory today taking home the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.68.
  • Jackie House finished first in the 100 freestyle in 53.19 ahead of fellow Catamount Poppas who finished second in 54.30.
  • House earned another individual victory taking home the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:04.35 while teammate Church came in second finishing in 5:06.02.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
Following their matchup with the Rams the Catamounts will have one last exhibition meet at Middlebury on Friday, January 27 before the America East Championships begin. The start time for that meet is still to be determined and will not be streamed live. The America East Championship begins on Wednesday, February 22 and goes through Saturday, February 25 and will be streamed live on AmericaEast.TV. The Championship will be held at WPI in Worcester, Massachusetts this year.
