Men’s Basketball Defeats Maine 67-62 at Home Thursday Night

BURLNGTON, Vt. – TJ Hurley scored a team-high 18 points on Thursday evening as Vermont (11-7, 3-0 AE) defeated Maine (3-16, 1-3 AE) 67-62 from Patrick Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vermont and Maine exchanged baskets out of the gate, with Ben Johnson knocking down two threes in the first six minutes of play.
  • Sean Blake was able to make two straight paint finishes, but the Black Bears took control after the media timeout, getting out to a 19-16 lead with 10:17 remaining in the first half.
  • Maine steadied their lead in the next few minutes of play as it held a 21-18 lead with 7:36 remaining in the half.
  • Vermont still trailed 27-24 at the last media timeout of the half, even after Gus Yalden hit a right-wing three.
  • Vermont grabbed a 32-30 halftime lead after Ben Johnson drained a baseline mid-range jumper.
  • Maine came out strong in the second half, going on an 11-3 run to the 15:30 mark, and Vermont trailed 41-35.
  • The Black Bears extended their lead further, leaving Vermont trailing 49-40 at the 12-minute media timeout.
  • The Catamounts came storming back, going on a 13-1 run in the next four minutes of play, thanks to threes from David Simon, Ben Johnson, and TJ Hurley. Vermont led 53-50 with 7:53 remaining.

Following the win over Maine, the Catamounts will head on the road for a three-game road trip. The Catamounts will first face off against UAlbany on Monday (Jan. 19) from Patrick Gymnasium.
