Men’s Basketball Rolls Past New Hampshire 80-61 in America East Opener Saturday Afternoon

BURLNGTON, Vt. – TJ Hurley scored a team-high 20 points on Saturday afternoon as Vermont (9-7) cruised past New Hampshire (3-10) 80-61 from Lundholm Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After trading baskets back and forth to start the game, New Hampshire was able to take a 9-8 lead with 15;19 remaining in the first half, thanks to a couple of early threes.
  • The Catamounts went up 12-9 at the 12-minute media timeout after a Gus Yalden turnaround.
  • Vermont went up 27-19 thanks to threes from Momo Nkugwa and Ben Johnson with seven minutes remaining in the first half.
  • New Hampshire went on a 6-2 run in the next three minutes, but Vermont remained ahead 29-25.
  • Ben Johnson would record a block, and then Sean Blake fed TJ Hurley in transition to get a quick layup just before the half ended. Vermont went into halftime up 39-31. Hurley had a team-high 11 points.
  • Vermont came storming out of the half, going on a 15-10 run out the gate with the help of Gus Yalden down low and a TJ Hurley three. Catamounts led 54-41 with 15:09 remaining.
  • Vermont kept its lead over the next four minutes as Ben Michaels scored inside and Trey Woodyard hit a corner three.
  • A Sean Blake three prompted a New Hampshire timeout, with Vermont leading 68-53 and 7:22 remaining.
  • Ben Michaels threw down a dunk, extending the Catamounts' lead to 74-55 at the final media timeout.

  • TJ Hurley recorded a game-high 20 points on 8-12 shooting from the field and 3-3 from the charity stripe, while adding three rebounds and one steal.
  • Sean Blake stuffed the stat sheet, recording 17 points, five rebounds, a team-high six assists, and a team-high three steals.
  • Gus Yalden was the only other Catamount in double figures, scoring 18 points, while adding five rebounds and three assists.
  • TJ Long contributed a team-leading six rebounds.
  • The Catamounts got the better field goal percentage, shooting 53.3% (32-60) from the field, while the Wildcats shot 42.3% (22-52) from the field.
  • UVM topped New Hampshire on the boards, outrebounding them 32-28.
  • Vermont dominated inside, putting up 42 points in the paint to New Hampshire's 22.
  • With today's Win, Vermont Mutual Insurance Group will donate $100 to the Lund Family Center through the Cat's Win, Community Win's initiative. Vermont Mutual has donated over $5 Million Dollars since launching their Charitable Giving Fund in 2014.
 
UP NEXT
Following the win over New Hampshire, the Catamounts will head back home and host Binghamton on Thursday (Jan. 8) from Patrick Gymnasium.
