BURLINGTON, Vt. – Senior
Nile Walwyn and sophomore Skyler Davis will serve as captains of the University of Vermont men's soccer team for the 2015 season. Head coach
Jesse Cormier made the announcement today.
Walwyn, who is currently playing for the St. Kitts and Nevis national team, enters his senior season having started 29 of 38 games for the Catamounts. He became a regular starter in the UVM defensive unit last season and netted his first career goal, scoring the game-winning tally in a victory against Appalachian State. Walwyn has played in two World Cup qualifier matches for St. Kitts this summer.
"Nile is a tremendous competitor and has always been there for his teammates. He has grown from the fringes of the roster to become one of our most influential players. I'm proud of him and his development as a person, player and his consistent achievement in the classroom," said Cormier
Davis, a former cross country skier for the U.S. Ski Team, joined the Catamounts last season. Although he did not see any game action, Davis trained with the team and earned the respect of his teammates and coaches.
"Skyler is a natural born leader who has a tremendously positive impact on the program from day one. He has established himself as a strong, mature voice in the locker room and is an exemplary student. He has made amazing progress in training, his game has changed so much and is reflective of the consistent growth we have seen from the group as a whole. I'm excited for Skyler to play in his first match, he was waited a long time and prepared well to say the least," said Cormier.
Vermont advanced to the America East Tournament for the 10th time in Cormier's 11 years at the helm of the program. The Catamounts fell to eventual College Cup participant UMBC in the semifinals. UVM returns three of its top four scorers from 2014, including America East All-Conference First Team selection
Brian Wright who ranked among the league leaders in goals (9) and points (21).
