CATAMOUNTS RECAP
Vermont moved to 4-0 on the season when at home last Friday after earning a come-from-behind 2-1 win against Quinnipiac. The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute on a goal from Savanna Reilly, but UVM fought back in the last 10 minutes of regulation to pick up the victory.
Carla Godsman netted her third goal of the season in the 64th minute to tie the score at one, then
Landon Warren followed with the game-winner in the 66th minute.
Â
Tuesday's match saw Vermont notch goals from
Anne-Marie Farmer and
Tess O'Brien, but an early flurry from Pacific proved too much in the end for the Catamounts, falling by an 8-2 score.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Although Dartmouth leads the all-time series with the Catamounts, UVM has edged the Big Green four times since 2006 and was held off by just one goal on two other occasions. Throughout the entire series, the teams have played to 14 one-goal margins.
Â
Vermont has faced Bryant just once in field hockey, falling to its cross-New England rival by a 2-1 score in Providence, Rhode Island on Sept. 25, 2015.
Â
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH
The Big Green (1-3) notched their first win of the season on Sept. 9 against Bryant, winning a shootout over the Bulldogs for a 2-1 final score. Dartmouth also met UVM's divisional rivals Albany and Maine earlier this month, at which point the former was ranked ninth nationally. The squad most recently faced Pacific on Sunday, Sept. 11, being dealt a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Tigers.
Â
Offensively, the team has been led by senior Joanne Nazareth (2g) and freshman Carmen Braceras (2g). Time between the pipes has been split between freshman Emma Plumb and sophomore Hailey Valerio. Both have made two starts and Plumb has turned aside 32 shots in her four appearances.
Â
The 2016 campaign marks the 17th at the helm for head coach Amy Fowler. The winningest coach in program history, Fowler has coached 21 All-Ivy League First Team selections. As a player at Iowa from 1989-92, she played on three NCAA Final Four teams and was a three-time All-American.
Â
SCOUTING BRYANT
While Bryant (0-6) has had some struggles to start the year, the Bulldogs have been competitive, seeing one goal be the difference in four games on the young season. The squad was most recently dealt a 5-0 decision by Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 10. Prior to meeting the Catamounts on Sunday, Bryant travels to No. 20 Maine for a 4 p.m. matchup on Friday in Orono, Maine.
Â
Freshman Floor van Dommelen leads the Bulldogs with two goals early on, while senior Erin Karcher has chipped in an assist. Goalkeeper Marissa Elizardo has posted a goals against average of 2.25 thus far.
Â
Shaunessy Saucier is in her eighth season directing the Bulldogs and served as an assistant in 2008, Bryant's first at the NCAA Division I level. She is a 2005 graduate of Maine, where she captained the field hockey team twice and played in three America East Championship games.
Â
BENWOOD SCOOPS UP AMERICA EAST RECOGNITION
After her six-save performance against Quinnipiac last Friday, junior goalkeeper
Lena Benwood was honored as the America East Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. It was the second time she received the award, having also been tabbed in October 2014 as a freshman.
Â
The Quinnipiac match also marked the 11th career win for the mechanical engineering major, moving her up to ninth in program history in that category.
Â
LANDON LIGHTING UP THE SCORESHEET
Of Vermont's four wins, the team has battled back from second half deficits in three matches and
Landon Warren has played a role in each rally.
Â
The Baltimore product scored the game-tying goal against La Salle (Aug. 28) in a highlight reel sequence, then netted the game-winners versus Northeastern (Sept. 4) and Quinnipiac (Sept. 9). Her four goals entering Friday's meeting with Dartmouth lead the team.
Â
WINNING AT 'WIN'DER
With victories over Central Michigan (Aug. 26), La Salle (Aug. 28), Northeastern (Sept. 4) and Quinnipiac (Sept. 9), the Catamounts have compiled a 4-0 record thus far within the confines of Moulton Winder Field. The mark is the team's best since 2008, when UVM won five consecutive home matches to begin the season.
Â
The Catamounts are one of only five teams nationally to have four home wins at this early juncture of the season. The others are Duke, Penn State, Boston University and Saint Francis (Pennsylvania).
Â
WHO'S NEXT
The Catamounts next prepare for their final non-conference tune-ups before embarking on the America East portion of the schedule. Vermont hosts Siena at Moulton Winder Field on Friday, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m., then visits Cornell for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 25 in Ithaca, New York.
