CATAMOUNTS RECAP
UVM last played on Sunday, earning a 4-2 win over New England rival Bryant at Moulton Winder Field. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute but goals from
Landon Warren and
Rachael Picchi helped Vermont grab a 2-1 lead by the 20th minute. UVM ultimately took a 3-2 lead on
Tess O'Brien's tally in the 55th minute before
Anne-Marie Farmer sealed the win, converting a penalty corner in the final seconds of regulation.
Â
Goalkeeper
Lena Benwood recorded the 12th win of her career on Sunday, moving into a tie with Wendy Pouliot (1987-89) for eighth place in program history in that category.
Â
SCOUTING SIENA
Siena enters Friday's match with a record of 1-5, most recently being shutout at Rutgers on Sunday. The Saints picked up a 4-2 win at Colgate on Sept. 1 after a three-point performance from senior Danielle DeGroot.
Â
Along with DeGroot, Siena's offense has run through sophomore Fariyah Omarshah (3g, 1a) and senior Ashley Dona (2g, 2a). Freshman Mary Crumlish has spent the majority of time in goal and started all six contests en route to a 4.07 goals against average.
Â
Head coach and 2007 Iowa alum Kara Zappone is in her fifth season guiding the Saints after a five-year stint at Fairfield as an assistant coach. While at Fairfield, she helped take the Stags from three wins in 2007 to nine in both 2010 and 2011. As a player, she captained the Iowa squad of 2006 and made two trips to the NCAA Tournament with the Hawkeyes.
Â
SCOUTING CORNELL
Cornell boasts a record of 4-2 after coming away a 4-0 win at Lock Haven last Sunday. Two goals from Katie Carlson and two saves from goalkeeper Kelly Johnson were instrumental in the victory for the Big Red. Prior to hosting Vermont on Sunday, the team opens Ivy League play with Pennsylvania (Sept. 23).
Â
Entering the week with 11 points, Carlson has paced the Big Red offense (5g, 1a) along with junior Krysten Myers (3g, 4a). Johnson has made 21 saves in goal on the season, posting a goals against average of 1.07 which ranks eighth nationally.
Â
Donna Hornibrook has led Cornell since the 2004 season, guiding the Big Red to eight seasons of 10-plus wins. With 220 career wins to wrap up 2015, she ranks 18th among active head coaches and 16th in winning percentage (.632), marks that would be higher were her 60 wins at New Brunswick University in Canada included.
Â
INSIDE THE SERIES
Vermont historically has had Siena's number, emerging on top in 13 of 14 all-time meetings that date back to 1993. UVM boasts a 4-0 home mark since Moulton Winder Field opened in 2005 and fell to the Saints in a 3-2 road decision on Oct. 9, 2002. The Catamounts have also turned in shutout performances in nine of 13 wins.
Â
Cornell and UVM have met four times since the series began in 2005. Each match has been decided by a 2-0 score, with the Catamounts picking up the win on three occasions (2005, 2006, 2011). The teams last faced off on Sept. 20, 2015 when the Big Red dealt UVM a 2-0 defeat in Burlington.
Â
CHASING HISTORY
Friday's match will represent an opportunity for UVM to start 6-0 at home for just the second time in program history. In the program's inaugural season (1979), the Catamounts won all six home matches on the schedule en route to an 8-2-2 season record.
Â
LANDON LIGHTING UP THE SCORESHEET
Of Vermont's five wins, the team has battled back from second half deficits in three matches.
Landon Warren has played a role in each.
Â
The Baltimore product scored the game-tying goal against La Salle (Aug. 28) in a highlight reel sequence, then netted the game-winners versus Northeastern (Sept. 4) and Quinnipiac (Sept. 9). Her six goals lead the team and rank tied for second throughout America East.
Â
WINNING AT 'WIN'DER
With victories most recently over Quinnipiac (Sept. 9) and Bryant (Sept. 18), the Catamounts have compiled a 5-0 record thus far within the confines of Moulton Winder Field. The mark is the team's best since 2008, when UVM had an identical start on the home pitch.
Â
Boston University is the only other Division I team to have recorded a 5-0 start at home. Nine teams across the country boast a 4-0 record on their home pitch.
Â
WHO'S NEXT
New Hampshire stands as UVM's first America East opponent of 2016, traveling to Burlington for a Sunday, Oct. 2 contest at Moulton Winder Field.
Â
The 1 p.m. match also represents Vermont field hockey's annual Rally Against Cancer Game presented by Otter Creek Awnings and Vermont Custom Closets. Fans are encouraged to join the Catamounts in wearing pink at the game in support of the fight against cancer. Additionally, donations to the University of Vermont Cancer Center will be accepted at the marketing table on the concourse of Moulton Winder Field.
