UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. and MIDDLEBURY, Vt. –
Anna Kaplan (17:20.69) and
Autumn Albrecht (17:25.40) posted ECAC-qualifying times in the 5,000-meter as the Vermont men's and women's track & field teams began competition on Friday at the two-day Penn State National Open.
In the women's distance medley relay, the UVM group of
Katie Nolan,
Smita Boesch-Dining,
Gemma Del Rossi and
Lauren Trumble teamed up to take third in 11:53.25, an additional ECAC qualifying time. Only Stanford and Penn State finished ahead of the Catamounts.

In the long jump, senior
Ian Weider was seventh (6.76m). In the same event on the women's side classmate
Mallory Honan turned in a ninth place finish with a mark of 5.56 meters.
Both Kaplan and Albrecht were in the top-5 in the 5,000 meter, locking down third and fifth place, respectively.
A total of 27 schools made the trek to Penn State for the two-day meet. Three ranked squads (No. 13 Stanford, No. 16 Virginia Tech, No. 21 Penn State) help compose the men's field. On the women's side, No. 20 Georgetown and No. 23 Stanford are competing.
Aside from Friday's action in Pennsylvania, junior
Pearl Abiti competed in the pentathlon at the Middlebury Invitational, finishing third with 3147 points. She was second in the 60 meter hurdles after finishing in 9.51 seconds and finished third in the high jump (1.56m).
Saturday's (Jan. 28) final day of competition at Penn State begins at 10:30 a.m., while other Catamounts will be competing at New Hampshire as the Wildcats host UVM and Maine. That meet opens at 11:30 a.m.
