GUYANA - Catamount freshman goalkeeper
Sierra Espeland took home an indoor gold medal with the United States Women's National Team following the 2017 Indoor Pan American Cup this past weekend.
Â
"It's such an experience when you hear the anthem for the first time wearing a United States jersey, and there's nothing really like it," Espeland said when asked about her experience representing her country.
Â
The United States did not lose in the tournament, beating Argentina 2-1 in the gold medal game on Saturday, Oct. 21. Through the tournament, the USWNT outscored its opponents 35 to 7, defeating Canada in the semifinal 4-1. Espeland saw action in a 7-1 win over host nation Guyana in round-robin play, earning her first international cap.
Â
"Beating good teams like Argentina and Canada made the experience that much better, just being able to observe those games I learned so much about how I can improve as a goalie and how I can help direct field players moving forward," Espeland added.
It was Team USA's best finish since taking the silver medal in both the 2005 and 2008 events.
