SCOUTING UCONN
UConn (1-1-0, 0-0-0 WHEA) begins its conference schedule with Saturday's matchup against the Catamounts. The Huskies finished the 2016-17 season in seventh place in the conference (14-19-2, 11-11-2 WHEA), but return top scorers Leah Lum (18-11-29) and Briana Colangelo (9-16-25). Senior goaltender Annie Belanger returns in net, recording a shutout in the season's first game against St. Cloud State. Freshman forward Natalie Snodgrass has tallied a goal and an assist in her first two collegiate games.Â
Â
The Huskies return a strong power play unit (14.3 percent in 2016-17) that has already capitalized in the early part of the season at a rate of 16.7 percent. Vermont is 6-for-6 on the penalty kill through one game at Providence.Â
Â
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Catamounts and UConn first met on Jan. 1, 2006 at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Huskies won that contest and hold a 24-8-3 record over Vermont. The two Hockey East teams split last season's series with the Catamounts taking the first game. Vermont sprinted out to a 3-0 lead on goals from
Alyssa Gorecki, Picard, and
Kourtney Menches.
Cassidy Campeau buried the insurance goal as the Catamounts won that contest 4-2.
