UCONN SPLIT
Connecticut used a three-goal second period and a pair of tallies from Spencer Naas to post a 5-1 victory to open a weekend series last Friday at the XL Center.
Ross Colton scored the only UVM goal on the power play early in the second period for his team-high sixth tally of the year. Rookie goalie
Tyler Harmon made his NCAA debut in relief of starter
Stefanos Lekkas in the third period and registered four saves.
UVM responded on Saturday from 2-0 down with four unanswered goals for a 4-2 win to earn a split in the series in Hartford. Colton cashed in on a penalty shot during a shorthanded situation, while forwards
Jarrid Privitera and
Matt Alvaro added tallies during a three-goal second period. Lekkas stopped 31 shots for his third win of the year. Vermont went 2-for-9 on the power play and was a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill on the weekend.
SCOUTING BC
The Eagles started their season 1-5-1 but have won three in a row since, all in Hockey East play. Boston College swept Merrimack in a home-and-home series last weekend before edging UConn 2-1 at Conte Forum on Tuesday night. BC owns first place in the Hockey East standings with eight points at 4-1-0 after being selected to finish fourth in the preseason coaches poll.Â
Jerry York's squad brings a balanced scoring attack to the Gut as three players share the team-lead with six points in Casey Fitzgerald, Graham McPhee, and Logan Hutsko. Joseph Woll has started eight of the team's 10 games between the pipes and is 3-4-1 with a 2.62 goals against average and a .905 save percentage. BC's power play is just 1-for-20 in league play, but its penalty kill sits north of 90 percent in conference games.
York is in his 24th season as the head coach at his alma mater with 570 career wins at Boston College and 1037 overall in Division I, the most in college hockey history. His Eagles reached the Hockey East title game last season at TD Garden before falling 4-3 to UMass Lowell.Â
SERIES HISTORY
Friday marks the 67th meeting in the all-time series. Last year was the schools' third consecutive meeting in the Hockey East Quarterfinals and the fourth in the last five seasons. The Eagles swept the Catamounts in the quarterfinals in March with 7-0 and 7-4 victories at Conte Forum.
BC's Ryan Fitzgerald won the 2016 series in a decisive Game 3 with a deflected wrist shot midway through the first overtime period. In 2015,
Jarrid Privitera scored the lone goal three minutes into the third period of Game 3 to send UVM to TD Garden off an assist from his brother Alexx.
THE SPECIAL SAUCE
UVM ranks 11th nationally in combined special teams at 56.2 percent. The Vermont penalty kill is above 90 percent through the opening nine games to lead Hockey East and rank seventh in the country. The power play has scored at least once in seven of the team's first nine contests this season and clicks at better than 20 percent. The Catamounts have scored a shorthanded goal in two of their last four games and are tied with BU, UMass Lowell and UConn for the Hockey East lead.
AWESOME ROSS
Colton currently has sole possession of the Hockey East lead in goals with seven on the year, and he is already within five of his rookie total. Colton is tied for third nationally in goal scoring and is one of only nine players in the country with at least seven tallies. The sophomore forward is also tied for second in the nation in power play goals (4), and drew a shorthanded penalty shot last weekend which he converted.Â
WHO'S NEXT
Vermont hits the road to face Northeastern next Friday, Nov. 17 at Matthews Arena with faceoff set for 7 p.m. UVM then returns to Gutterson to host UConn on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving (Nov. 21) at 7:05 p.m.
