"I am very pleased and impressed that Justin has himself in such great shape early in the season," said head coach Matt Belfield. "With only eligibility remaining for the indoor season, it's clear that he intends to make the most of this opportunity. Justin has been doing great things for UVM for over four years now, and I love the example of hard work and toughness he models for the team."
Liechty registered a time of 49.97 seconds in the sprint to win by a margin of 0.18 seconds. His adjusted time, accounting for the flat track at Leverone Field House, was 49.19 seconds. That mark is currently the fastest 400 meter time in the conference. Liechty's time qualified him for the New England Championships and the ECAC/IC4A Championships.
The graduate student serves as captain for the men's track & field team during this year's indoor season. A native of Morrisonville, New York, Liechty is UVM's record holder in the indoor 400 meter dash with a time of 48.28 seconds. He also ran on the school's record-holding 4x400 meter relay team that registered a time of 3:15.23 last season at the ECAC/IC4A Championships.
Liechty wins his first weekly America East honor. The three-year captain was named All-IC4A and All-New England in the 400 meter dash in 2018.
Vermont track & field continues the indoor season after the winter break for a second trip to Hanover, New Hampshire. The Catamounts compete in the annual Dartmouth Relays, starting on Friday (Jan. 10) at Leverone Field House.
