BECKER HITS THE CENTURY MARK
Cioffi Men's Basketball Head Coach
John Becker won his 100th-career America East game with a 74-65 victory at UMass Lowell on Saturday. Becker reached the career milestone in his 120th conference game, the fastest by an America East coach and tied for the fourth-fastest in NCAA history – Gonzaga's Mark Few (112 games in the WCC), Kentucky coaching legend Adolph Rupp (116 games in the SEC), Temple's John Chaney (118 games in the A-10), and Kansas' Bill Self (120 games in the Big XII). Becker joins an elite group as Rupp, Chaney, and Self have been inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
LAMB'S BLOCK PARTY
Becker wasn't the only one to hit the career century mark in Saturday's win as
Anthony Lamb became the seventh UVM player to record over 100 career blocks. The junior forward has turned away 45 shots this season, the second-most by an America East player, and ranks No. 32 nationally.
MID-MAJOR POWER RANKINGS
The Green and Gold maintained their top-20 rankings in two mid-major poll this week. UVM was voted No. 14 in the
CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 and tabbed No. 19 in the
MidMajorMadness.com 'The Other Top-25 Poll.'
LARGEST CONFERENCE SCORING MARGINS
With eight America East games under their belt, the Cats have the fourth-largest conference scoring margin in the country at 16.4. Fourth-ranked Gonzaga leads the pack at 29.1 and top-ranked Tennessee follows in second at 18.4. Lipscomb trails in third with an 18.0 league scoring margin.
SCOUTING MAINE
The Black Bears went 3-5 through the first half of conference play and matched their league win total from last year. Maine has remained as one of the top rebounding teams in America East games. The Black Bears sit third in rebounding average (34.8), offensive rebounds (76), and rebounding margin (+3.5) against league opponents. Andrew Fleming was named America East Player of the Week on Monday after he posted 21.5 points and 9.5 points per game in a 2-0 week. Last Wednesday at UML, he racked up 38 points and matched an America East single-game record with 18 field goals. He became the first player in the last 20 seasons to shoot 90.0% percent when attempting at least 20 field goals in a single game. Sergio El Darwich ranks 12th in the league with a 14.6 conference scoring average. The junior was boasted 11.7 points and 5.2 boards per game in his last four outings.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Vermont and Maine will meet for the 142nd time in the second-longest standing rivalry in school history. The Catamounts have beat the Black Bears 15 straight times, the longest active winning streak against a conference opponent, and hold a slight 71-70 edge in the all-time series. UVM also owns a 10-game home winning streak against Maine as the Black Bears have not reached the win column in Burlington since Jan. 18, 2011. Last month, Vermont topped Maine 73-49 in Bangor as nine different Catamounts scored a point.
