BURLINGTON, Vt. – Indoor Track and Field senior
John Benner, a Natural Resources major, is our TD Bank Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending February 2.
John registered a new school record in the mile to earn a victory on Saturday at the New England Championships. Benner ran a record setting time of 4:05.34 to win the mile by nearly two seconds. The previous record was 4:07.12 set by
Thomas O'Leary in February of 2016. Benner's mile time is the best from a Division I student-athlete in New England this year and the second-best mark in America East.
Saturday marked the second school record for Benner. He is also the school's outdoor 3000-meter record-holder with a time of 8:34.85.
Vermont track & field returns to action on Friday (Feb. 7) for the UAlbany Invite at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island, New York. The Catamounts will also be at Dartmouth on Saturday (Feb. 8).
