BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont men's soccer program has seven former student-athletes currently playing in the professional ranks across the globe. Here's an update on how the former Catamounts are doing.
Connor Tobin '09
Forward Madison FC (USL League One)
In February, Tobin inked a deal with the USL League One's Forward Madison FC for a second season. In the team's inaugural season last year, Tobin served as team captain and played more minutes as a center back than any of his teammates. Forward Madison FC kicks off the season on Saturday (July 25) against North Texas SC.
Loftur Eriksson '17
Thor Akureyri (Inkasso League – Iceland)
The 2020 campaign marks Eriksson's six season with Thor Akureyri, which plays in the second-highest level of soccer in Iceland. During his time with Thor Akureyri, he has started 69 matches and notched a pair of goals as a defender.
Brian Wright '17
Birmingham Legion FC (USL Championship)
Goals: July 15 | July 19
Wright is currently playing in his second season with Birmingham Legion FC. In last Wednesday night's season opener, Wright scored a goal in the 31st minute as BHM beat Memphis 901 FC 3-0 that aired nationally on ESPN2. He has scored six goals and been credited with four assists during his time with BHM.
Dani Rovira '19
Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USL Championship)
Rovira will suit up for his second season with the Riverhounds in 2020. The midfielder made eight appearances for the Black and Gold in 2019, including four starts. He totaled 15 interceptions, 15 tackles and seven clearances in his rookie campaign. Finishing in the top three of the Eastern Conference in each of the last two seasons, Pittsburgh has become one of the top teams in America's second tier of professional soccer.
Geo Alves '19
New York Cosmos (National Independent Soccer Association)
Alves inked a deal with the Cosmos last week. Last fall, he played with Brockton FC United in the United Premier Soccer League (USPL). The New York Cosmos have historically rostered some of the best players to ever play the game, including Franz Beckenbauer and Pelé.
Ívar Örn Árnason '20
KA Akureyri (Pepsi Max League – Iceland)
Last month, Árnason rejoined KA Akureyri of the Pepsi Max League – the top division in Iceland. Árnason has been a part of the club since 2014. After graduating from UVM, he has started every game for the club and helped KA Akureyri to three draws as a defender.
Jon Arnar Barðdal '20
HK Kopavogs (Pepsi Max League – Iceland)
Goal: June 20
Barðdal joined HK Kopavogs in June in the same league as classmate Árnason. Barðdal has seen action in 172 minutes with one goal and one assist. For his efforts in the team's match on June 20, he was named to the Pepsi League Team of the Week and selected as the league's Player of the Week.
