AMHERST, Mass. – UMass outscored Vermont 5-0 in the first quarter and held on late to hand the Cats their third straight loss, 12-10, Wednesday afternoon.
Vermont falls to 2-6 on the season while UMass has now won three straight and improves to 4-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMass was strong in the opening frame holding the Cats off the scoreboard and netting five goals of their own to take a 5-0 lead into the second.
- Ryan Cornell stood tall in cage and made eight saves in first 15 minutes.
- Vermont answered the bell with three straight goals to start the second quarter. Michael McCormack got the scoring started on a nifty feed from Griffin Fenech before Thomas McConvey dodged from the right wing to make it 5-3.
- UMass countered with three straight and took a 9-4 lead into halftime.
- UVM's defense was strong in the 3rd quarter holding UMass to just one goal.
- McCormack scored both of the Catamount goals in the third and pulled UVM to with four at 10-6 heading to the fourth.
- UVM started the fourth man-up and David Closterman finished a nice feed from Brock Haley to make it 10-7. Haley got his own goal just 90 seconds later when Jackson Canfield found the Canadian righty in transition to make it 10-8.
- After two UMass scores on the next two possessions, McCormack drilled his fourth of the day from deep to make it 12-9 and then Haley replicated his earlier effort – this time on a feed from Devin O'Leary – to make it 12-10.
- The Cats had the extra-man with 37 seconds to go but UMass goalie Dom Elmo made a save and UMass cleared to ice the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Ryan Cornell made a career-high 17 saves in cage – including 11 in the first half.
- Thomas McConvey now has at least one point in every every career game for the Catamounts.
