BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Catamounts earned their third-straight victory Saturday afternoon defeating UMBC 12-3 on Alumni Day in America East action from Virtue Field. Saturday was also the Catamounts annual Spread Respect Game and Rally Around Mental Health game presented by Inspired Closets.
Vermont improves to 5-6 overall and 2-0 in league play while UMBC falls to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Catamounts held the Retrievers scoreless in the first quarter with seven saves from Ryan Cornell. Brock Haley opening the scoring for the Catamounts with an unassisted goal at 5:14 in the first quarter. Later in the first, Cornell dished a beautiful pass to David Closterman for a sweet finish in front bringing the score to 2-0. With about a minute left, Griffin Fenech scored unassisted to finish the quarter up 3-0.
- The second quarter was more of the same from Vermont. UVM continued to keep UMBC off the board and Haley and Fenech picked up where they left off with two unassisted goals. Charlie Pope brought the score to 6-0 with a goal assisted by Liam Limoges.
- The third quarter was another 3-0 frame for the Catamounts. Haley earned his hat trick on a tally assisted by Closterman, followed by an unassisted goal from Thomas McConvey. The last goal of the quarter came from Liam Limoges.
- McConvey completed his hat trick in the fourth quarter with two tallies and Closterman added another as Vermont wrapped up its dominant win in a 3-3 final frame.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Vermont is 2-0 in conference play for the third straight season. It is just the fourth time in program history the Catamounts have opened America East play 2-0. 1993 was the only other time outside of the Coach Feifs era.
- Ryan Cornell made seven saves in the first quarter as UMBC outshot the Catamounts 15-7. Cornell finished the game with 12 saves in 53:45 of game action his second highest total this season.
- David Closterman led the Catamounts in scoring for the second straight contest with five points.

The Catamounts are back in action next weekend as they travel to face UMass Lowell. Action is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 9 from the River Hawks Cushing Field. The action will be broadcast live on AmericaEast.TV.
