STOWE, Vt. – Four Catamounts earned podium finishes to lead the University of Vermont ski team to a 17-point advantage over Dartmouth on the first day of racing at the UVM Carnival held at Stowe Mountain Resort and Trapp Family Lodge.
UVM scored 457 points after the first day of competition and is followed by Dartmouth in second (440 pts) and New Hampshire in third (426 pts).

Men's Giant Slalom (.pdf)The Catamounts won the men's giant slalom team event with 128 points as UVM placed two skiers on the podium and had three skiers in the top-10. Vermont also took first place in the women's 5K freestyle with 121 points. Three Catamounts earned top-10 finishes in the event.
At Trapp Family Lodge, New Hampshire's Annika Taylor won the women's 5K freestyle with a time of 14:09.8.
Newcomer and Vermonter
MK Cirelli (Rutland, Vt.) picked up her first podium appearance as a Catamount. A transfer from Northern Michigan, Cirelli placed second overall with a time of 14:24.5.
Alayna Sonnesyn, who led UVM in both Nordic races at the Bates Carnival last weekend, finished fifth and
Stephanie Kirk rounded out the scoring for Vermont with a seventh place finish.
In the men's 10K freestyle race, Patrick Caldwell of Dartmouth earned his second straight win in the skate race, posting a time of 24:30.7.
Vermont senior
Rogan Brown, who did not race at the season-opening Bates Carnival, earned his third podium appearance of his career with a second place finish and time of 25:38.8.
Cole Morgan and
Jack Hegman finished 8-9 to round out the scoring skiers for the Catamounts.
Over at the Main Street course at Stowe Mountain Resort, the men's alpine team placed three skiers in the top-10 in the giant slalom.
Griffin Brown and
Dom Garand both earned podium spots with a 2-3 finish for the Catmounts.
Robert Cone of Middlebury won the race with a time of 2:08.12, narrowly beating out Brown who posted a time of 2:08.71 and had the fastest second run of the day with at 1:03.98. Garand led the race after the first run with a time of 1:03.89 and finished with a two-run total of 2:08.96.
Taylor Wunsch rounded out the top three scorers for Vermont, finishing sixth overall.
The Dartmouth Big Green took the top two spots on the podium in the women's giant slalom race. Foreste Peterson won the event with a time of 2:11.41 and teammate Libby Gibson was 17 tenths of a second behind for second place (2:11.58). Lisa Wedsjoe of New Hampshire finished third, edging out Vermont's
Elli Terwiel for the final spot on the podium. Wedsjoe posted a time of 2:13.61, while Terwiel clocked in at 2:13.98.
Sophomore
Brittany Lathrop earned her second top-10 finish of the season, placing ninth and
Laurence St. Germain was 20th overall to round out the scoring for the Catamounts.
The UVM Carnival continues on Saturday, with the slalom races starting at 9 a.m. and the Nordic races scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
