JEFFERSONVILLE/HUNTINGTON, Vt. – The Vermont Catamounts own an 86 point lead over Dartmouth, thanks to a strong showing by the UVM alpine team, after the first day of racing at the Saint Michael's Carnival.
 
The men's and women's alpine teams took first place in the team standings following the giant slalom races. The Nordic squads each finished second in the classic races.

At Smugglers' Notch, the UVM women's alpine team finished 1-2-6-7. Kristina Riis-Johannessen earned her second win of the year and ninth EISA victory of her career in the GS race. She posted a winning time of 1:50.19. Teammate Elli Terwiel finished second (1:52.34) for her second podium appearance this season. Laurence St. Germain and Brittany Lathrop finished 6-7 to round out UVM's top skiers.
 
In the men's race, Robert Cone won for the second straight weekend with a time of 1:50.23. Will St. Germain led UVM skiers with a fourth place finish (1:51.38) and Sandy Vietze was fifth (1:51.70). Taylor Wunsch rounded out UVM's scoring skiers, placing 10th overall.
 
At Sleepy Hollow Inn, Middlebury's Heather Mooney continued to dominate the women's Nordic races. She won the 5K classic race with a time of 17:18.3. MK Cirelli earned second for the second straight week, posting a time of 17:48.6. Marion Woods and Stephanie Kirk finished sixth and 11th, respectively to close out the scoring for the Catamounts.
 
In the men's classic race, Jack Hegman earned his second career podium appearance with a third place finish and time of 31:29.7. Fabian Stocek of Dartmouth won the race, clocking in at 31:07.6. Rogan Brown was seventh and Ben Hegman placed 10th to help the Catamounts earn second in the team standings of the event.
 
The second day of the SMC Carnival begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with the first run of the women's slalom race. The Nordic event begins at 10 a.m. with the mixed relay.
