MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Vermont ski team owns a 51-point lead over New Hampshire after Day 1 of racing at the 92nd Middlebury Carnival. The Catamounts posted 458 points, bolstered by wins by both alpine teams in the slalom team standings. New Hampshire is second with 407 points and Dartmouth is in third with 389 points.

Jorgen Grav picked up his second win of the season and fifth of his career in the men's 10K classic race. He posted a winning time of 26:07.6.
Rogan Brown was eighth overall and
Cole Morgan placed 13th to round out the scoring for Vermont.
In the women's 10K race,
Stephanie Kirk paced the Catamounts, finishing just fourth with a time of 31:55.0. Middlebury's Heather Mooney won for the sixth race of the season with a time of 31:10.2. Annika Taylor of New Hampshire was second and Corey Stock from Dartmouth placed third to round out the podium.
Fellow Catamounts
Marion Woods, ninth, and
MK Cirelli, 11th rounded out the top three skiers for Vermont.
On the hill at the Middlebury Snow Bowl, Catamounts were on two-thirds of the podium in the women's slalom race.
Elli Terwiel finished second with a time of 1:41.33 and was followed by
Laurence St. Germain's first career podium appearance. She posted a two-run time of 1:41.86 to place third. Mardene Haskell of Colby College won the race with a time of 1:40.54 after the fastest second run of the day (48.25).
Darquise Denis was the third Catamount to score for the squad, finshing 14th overall.
In the men's slalom race UVM finished 3-4-5, led by
Taylor Wunsch's third podium appearance of the year. Wunsch clocked in to third place with a time of 1:31.95.
Wunsch was followed by
Sandy Vietze (1:32.23) in fourth and
Dom Garand (1:32.58) in fifth place.
Oliver Coley of New Hampshire won the race with a time of 1:30.81. He had the fastest second run of the racers at 46.80.
Day 2 of the Middlebury Carnival begins at 9:30 a.m. for alpine events and at 10 a.m. for the Nordic races.
