LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The Vermont ski team fell from third place to fifth place after the first day of alpine racing at the NCAA Ski Championships in Lake Placid, New York. The second day of the event featured the giant slalom races at Whiteface Mountain.

All three Vermont men's skiers finished in the top-15 led by Dom Garand's fifth place finish and time of 2:18.42. Will St. Germain was ninth (2:19.28) and Taylor Wunsch was 15th overall (2:20.83). All three skiers were making their NCAA debuts.
 
Garand picked up All-America First Team honors, while St. Germain earned a spot on the All-America Second Team.
 
St. Germain was 12th after the first run but posted the fourth best time in the second run to move into the top-10. Wunsch also improved on his first run to move up four spots in the final standings.

Middlebury skiers, Robert Cone and Christopher McKenna finished first and third, respectively. Cone posted a winning tim eof 2:16.79. Sebastian Brigovic of Denver placed second overall to complete the podium.

 
The Vermont women's team struggled on the hill. Elli Terwiel was the only Catamount able to put together two clean runs and finish the race. She placed 12th overall to score for Vermont.
 
Laurence St. Germain did not complete the first run and Kristina Riis-Johannessen failed to complete the second run.

Western skiers took the first five spots, led by Mateja Robnik of New Mexico (2:22.56). Monica Huebner and Kristine Gje Haugen of Denver rounded out the top three finishers.
 
Overall 10 of the 34 skiers in both races suffered a DNF in the competition.
 
The NCAA Ski Championships continue on Friday (March 13) with the men's and women's classic races at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.
