WATERVILLE, Maine – The UVM Nordic ski team opened the 2018 season by winning the Colby Carnival on Sunday. The Catamounts accrued 490 total points on the team leaderboard and edged Dartmouth by four points for the top spot. The races were held at Quarry Road.

Nordic Day 2 Highlights (India Harvey)
Due to the alpine races at the Colby Carnival taking place next weekend and Saturday's cancellations, the overall team competition was based on the combined total of Sunday's women's and men's Nordic races. Behind UVM and Dartmouth, Middlebury rounded out the podium with 374 points.
In the women's 5K race,
Alayna Sonnesyn dominated the competition by winning the event by almost 22 seconds. The senior finished the race at 15:29 over second-place finisher Dartmouth newcomer Katharine Ogden at 15:48.
In the men's 10K race,
Finn O'Connell came in second place at 28:07 for his first career podium finish on the EISA Circuit. Colby's Zane Fields won his home race at 27:52 while Dartmouth's Luke Brown recorded an overall time of 28:34 for the final spot on the podium.
The Nordic team returns to the trails at the St. Michael's Carnival from Jan. 20-21. The Nordic races will be held at Sleepy Hallow. The UVM alpine team will open the season next weekend at the Colby Carnival. The alpine races will be hosted at Sugarloaf.
