HANOVER, N.H. – The UVM ski team made a strong push to overtake the Big Green at the Dartmouth Carnival on Saturday by winning gold in men's and women's slalom, but the Catamounts finished second in the team standings. Vermont accrued 902 points this weekend, trailing only host Dartmouth with 1019 points.

The Catamounts earned a pair of podium steps in the women's slalom race. Paula Moltzan won the event with a combined time 1:46.79. The sophomore was the fastest skier on her first run at 52.33 and posted a time of 54.56 on her second run. Francesca English followed in second place at 1:47.34. English had the second-fastest trip down the course on her first run at 52.94 and the third-quickest time on her second run at 1:47.34.
 
Like in the women's race, the UVM men's alpine team grabbed two podium spots. Sandy Vietze held off Dartmouth's Tanguy Nef by 13-one hundredths of a second for the slalom title. The senior finished the race with a total time of 1:42.57, including the fastest time of the field on his second run at 51.33. Max Roeisland landed in third place with an official time of 1:43.10. Patrick McConville also earned a top-10 finish in eighth place at 1:45.42.
 
In the women's 10K freestyle race, Alayna Sonnesyn snagged the third podium step at 14:17.8. Lina Sutro placed fifth at 14:32.0 and Margie Freed added an eighth-place finish for the Green and Gold at 15:10.5. On the men's side, Cully Brown also claimed the final podium step in third place at 26:19.70. Finn O'Connell was right behind Brown in fourth place at 26:19.70.
 
Middlebury finished in third place behind Dartmouth and Vermont with 699 points. New Hampshire trailed in fourth place with 599 points and Colby totaled 527 points for fifth place.
 
Vermont will compete in the Williams Carnival next Friday (Feb. 16) and Saturday (Feb. 17). The alpine team will race at Jiminy Peak/Berksire while the Nordic team hits the trails at Prospect Mountain. 

2018 UVM SKI & RACE & PANCAKE BREAKFAST – FEB. 25
Join UVM Skiing for the 2018 UVM Ski Race and Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, February 25 starting at 10 a.m. at Cochran's Ski Area in Richmond.  We will be setting an alpine dual style course, come join the fun as all abilities are welcome.  Bring your Nordic skis as well and pick up some tips from our Nordic team.
