STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Alayna Sonnesyn was the top UVM finisher during the Nordic classical races on Day 2 of the 2018 NCAA Skiing Championships at Howelsen Hill on Thursday in Colorado.
The Catamounts, who held the overall lead after Day 1 with 134 points, dropped into fifth with 162 points at the midway point of the championship. Colorado has the overall lead with 276 points, followed by Denver (267), Utah (235), and Dartmouth (217.5). Vermont holds a 19-point lead on both Middlebury and Montana State heading into Friday's slalom.

Sonnesyn, a First Team All-American last year in both Nordic disciplines, placed 15th in the women's 5K classic with a final time of 16:20.1. Her teammates
Lina Sutro (17:09.2) and
Margie Freed (17:09.7) were separated by just half a second and earned 32nd and 33rd respectively.
Cully Brown led the men's team in the 10K classic on Thursday, finishing just inside the top-20 with a 19th place showing in 29:23.9.
Juri Miosga (30:05.3) and
Finn O'Connell (30:27.4) were 34th and 38th to round out Vermont's male Nordic contingent.
The NCAA Skiing Championships continue on Friday night (March 9) with the men's and women's slalom under the lights at Howelsen Hill. The women's first run is scheduled for 8:45 p.m. (ET), followed by the men's opening run at 9:30 p.m. (ET). Both slalom races can be seen live for free at
