BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Vermont head coach
Jim Plumer announced the addition of five recruits joining the Catamounts this fall, bringing the total to nine new players.
The new recruits join the four signees from December: Alex Gray (Brownlee, Sask.), Lilly Holmes (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Elise Murphy (Roseau, Minn.), and Maude Poulin-Labelle (Sherbrooke, Qué).
"We are really excited to welcome this large class of nine to our UVM Women's Hockey family," Plumer said. "This group brings hockey talent, character, and academic prowess to our program and I know they are going to have a big impact on our team for years to come."
Corinne McCool | F | West Roxbury, Mass. | Lawrence Academy
McCool joins the Catamounts from Lawrence Academy, where she was a two-time team MVP and captain as a senior. McCool chose UVM for the opportunities in athletics but also for the variety of academic programs. She hails from a family with a high hockey pedigree, her father, Steve, played hockey at Boston College while her brother, Jack, recently finished his freshman season at Williams College.
Abby Cleary | F | Buffalo, N.Y. | Quinnipiac
Cleary heads to Burlington after spending two years at Quinnipiac. As a Bobcat, Cleary played in 49 games while skating to an even plus/minus. A graduate of Shattuck St. Mary's, Cleary tallied 70 points in 118 games in two seasons and won a U16 National Championship and a U19 National Championship.
Sini Karjalainen | D | Posio, Finland | Kuortaneen Lukio
Karjalainen join the Catamounts this fall and hails from Finland. Karjalainen captained the U18 Finnish National team and played a total of 57 games with the U18 squad, scoring five goals and adding 10 assists. She chose UVM for the athletic and academic opportunities in Burlington.
Blanka Škodová | G | Šternberk, Czech Republic | Vermont Academy
Škodova travels north to join the Catamounts from Vermont Academy this fall. A native of the Czech Republic, Škodova led Vermont Academy to the 2018 NEPSAC Championship with a 1.87 goals against average and a .948 save percentage in over 1,000 minutes played. Škodova chose UVM for the opportunity to continue playing hockey at the highest level.
Theresa Schafzahl | F | Weiz, Austria | BG Weiz
Schafzahl will join the Catamounts this fall from Austria, and has spent the past four seasons as a member of the U18 Austrian National team and the past three seasons on the Austrian National team. Playing 36 games in her nation's sweater, Schafzahl tallied 13 goals and added 17 assists for 30 points. Schafzahl recorded 25 goals and 20 assists in only 15 games last season in the EWHL (Elite Women's Hockey League).
