STOWE, Vt. – Vermont's
Bill Harmeyer,
Lina Sutro and
Francesca English won events as Vermont claimed eight of the 12 podium places on day one of the UVM Carnival in Stowe Friday. After the opening day of competition Vermont is in first place with 517 points, 50 points ahead of second-place Dartmouth.

Day One Results
The men's Nordic squad continued its early run of dominance sweeping the 10k Freestyle podium with
Bill Harmeyer winning his third straight carnival race (26:51.0).
Ben Ogden (26:56.9) and
Karl Schulz (27:02.1) followed closely behind to finish second and third.
Vermont placed all nine racers in the top 13 on the men's side. Vermont has now claimed 13 of 15 podium spots in the five carnival races this season.
English won her first career EISA race leading a podium sweep of the giant slalom for Vermont. She had the third fastest second-run time in the field to finish with a combined time of 2:09.38. She finished one-tenth of a second ahead of her teammate
Mille Graesdal who had posted the fastest first-run time in the field. UVM's Rachael Desrochers finished third overall with a combined time of 2:11.69. Vermont's
Josefine Selvaag was eighth overall for the Catamounts. It was the first time this alpine season the Vermont women placed four in the top-10.
On the women's side in the 5k Freestyle, sophomore
Lina Sutro took top honors finishing in 14:42.4, over 30 seconds ahead of Dartmouth's Emily Hyde. The win is Sutro's third of the carnival season after sweeping the podium to begin the year at St. Lawrence.
Lizzie Larkins (15:45.2) and
Margie Freed (15:45.3) finished 13th and 14th for the Catamounts while
Anna Bizyukova finished just three seconds back in 15th.
Max Roeisland was the top male finisher for the Catamounts in the giant slalom, placing second overall with a time of 2:04.93. He was nine-hundredths of a second behind Dartmouth's Drew Duffy, the EISA bib leader in the event.
Patrick McConville finished sixth in a time of 2:06.48 while
David Frisk was right behind him for a seventh-place finish for Vermont coming in at 2:06.70.
The 2019 UVM Carnival concludes tomorrow morning in the Green Mountains. The men's and women's slalom will take place at Mt. Mansfield Ski Club at Stowe Mountain Resort starting at 9 a.m. At the Trapp Family Lodge Nordic action will begin with the women's 15k Classic at 9:30 a.m. followed by the men's 20k Classic at 11:30 a.m.
