HANCOCK, Vt. –
Patrick McConville finished second in the men's slalom and
Margie Freed and
Lina Sutro reached the podium in the women's 10k Classic as the Catamounts competed Friday in the 96th annual Middlebury College Carnival. After the opening day of competition Vermont sits in third place with 397 points, trailing the host Middlebury and Dartmouth.

Day One Results
McConville finished second in the men's slalom with a combined time of 1:38.51. Middlebury's Erik Arvidsson earned his first-collegiate win for the host Panthers with a time of 1:37.84. Vermont's
Max Roeisland finished in 10th place, earning a two-run time of 1:39.64. Rounding out the Vermont scorers was
Raphael Quenneville, who came in 11th overall in 1:39.69.
The best overall team performance for the Catamounts on day one was the women's Nordic squad.
Margie Freed led the pack, with a second-place finish in 29:18.5. Next for the Catamounts was
Lina Sutro, who came in with a time of 29:45.4 to place third overall. The Catamounts final scorer was
Jenny Pedersen who placed sixth overall in a time of 30:49.3. Mackenzie Rizio (9th, 31:03.8) and
Mara Niedling (15th, 31:36.3) also earned top-15 finishes for Vermont.
Finn O'Connell was the top male finisher for the Catamounts in the men's 15k Classic, placing seventh overall with a time of 40:08.0.
Karl Schulz finished right behind O'Connell in eighth place just 2.7 seconds later. Rounding out the Catamount scorers was
Bill Harmeyer, who came in 13th overall in 40:26.2.
Mille Graesdal paced the Catamounts in ninth place in the women's slalom, coming in with a time of 1:45.93. Her second run time of 50.66 was the fourth fastest in the field. Vermont's
Josefine Selvaag finished in 14th place, earning a two-run time of 1:47.13. Rounding out the Vermont scorers was
Francesca English, who came in 53rd overall.
The Middlebury Carnival continues tomorrow morning in Hancock. The men's and women's giant slalom will take place at the Middlebury Snow Bowl starting at 9:30 a.m. Nordic action will conclude at 10 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. as the men's and women's teams compete in the 10k and 5k Skate at the Rikert Nordic Center.
UVM alpine skiers
Paula Moltzan (USA, Bib 21) and
Laurence St. Germain (Canada, Bib 8) will ski in the women's slalom tomorrow at the 2019 FIS Alpine World Championships in Åre, Sweden. In the United States the first run of the slalom will be available on the Olympic Channel at 5 a.m. (ET). The second run will be live on NBCSN at 8 a.m. (ET).
