CRAFTSBURY, Vt. – Karl Schulz and Matias Øvrum finished one-two in the Men's 10k Freestlye and Joachim Jagge Lindstol placed second in the men's slalom leading Vermont on day one of the inaugural Harvard Carnival Friday. After the first day of competition Vermont is in second place with 431 points, 23 behind Middlebury.

The Catamounts secured five of the top eight spots in the Men's 10k Freestyle. Karl Schulz won the race in a time of 24:15.5, exactly 14 seconds ahead of his teammate Matias Ovrum, who placed second. Ben Ogden was the Catamounts final scorer, placing fourth overall in a time of 24:51.1. Bill Harmeyer finished fifth for UVM while Finn O'Connell placed 8th. The men's squad picked up 138 points, finishing 44 points ahead of anyone else in the field.
 
Jenny Pedersen was the Catamounts top finisher in the Women's 5k Freestyle. She placed 11th in a time of 14:40.3. Vermont's Margie Freed came in 14th seconds behind Pedersen with a mark of 14:41.7. Anna Bizyukova was the last Catamount to score, coming in 17th overall with a time of 14:45.1. The women's Nordic squad earned 90 points of the first day of competition.
 
A combo of freshmen led the men's team on the slopes earning top-five finishes in the slalom in their first career starts. Joachim Jagge Lindstoel finished in second place with an overall time of 1:34.05. He had the fastest second run time in the field at 47.96. Mathias Tefre finished in a tie for fifth place with a time of 1:34.85. Vermont's final scorer was Spencer Smith who placed 19th in a time of 1:36.83. The men's team secured 111 team points.
 
Another freshman, Marina Vilanova, was the Catamounts top finisher in the women's slalom. She placed seventh with a combined time of 1:42.46. Josefine Selvaag was the Catamounts next finisher in ninth place. She finished four-hundredths of a second behind Vilanova. Rachael Desrochers was Vermont's final scorer placing 27th in a time of 1:47.77. The trio earned 92 team points for Vermont.
 
The 2020 Harvard Carnival will conclude tomorrow morning. The men's and women's giant slalom will take place at Waterville Valley Academy starting at 9 a.m. At the Craftsbury Outdoor Center the men and women will compete in the 20k/15k Classic. The action will be streamed live on ESPN+ beginning at 10 a.m. Fans can access ESPN+ for a subscription fee of $4.99 a month. ESPN+ can also be bundled with Disney+ and hulu for $12.99 a month.
