JEFFERSONVILLE, Vt. –
Matias Øvrum won the 10k Freestyle Friday afternoon leading the Catamounts four podium performance on day one of the first Saint Michael's Carnival since 2018.
Jacob Nystedt and
Anna Bizyukova also earned EISA podiums in the 10k Freestyle while
Declan McCormack placed third in the giant slalom for the Catamounts. The Catamounts are in first place after the opening day of competition with 455 points. Dartmouth sits in second place 60 points behind Vermont.

At Sleepy Hollow, the Catamounts men's Nordic team led the way for Vermont for the second straight Friday. UVM claimed five of the top-seven places. Ovrum won his first race of the season with a time of 23:45.2. Nystedt earned his second third place of the season with a mark of 24:06.0.
Finn Sweet was UVM's final scorer, placing fourth just 2.8 seconds behind Nystedt.
Bjorn Westervelt (24.10.7) placed fifth for the Catamounts and
Greg Burt was seventh (24:28.1).
Bizyukova earned her first podium of the season with a third-place time of 27:36.4.
Waverly Gebhardt placed fifth with a time of 28:11.4. In her first career EISA start
Haley Brewster was UVM's final scorer of the day placing 11th overall with a time of 28:55.6.
At Smuggler's Notch McCormack continued the momentum from his third-place finish in the slalom at the Colby Carnival. He earned another third-place spot with the second fastest second run in the field at a time of 49.95. His two-run time was 1:40.83. First year
Mackenzie Wood was UVM's next finisher, placing 11th overall with a two-run time of 1:41.53.
David Frisk was the Catamounts final scorer of the day, placing 13th just .03 seconds behind Wood.
On the women's side
Ella Renzoni was the top-finisher placing fourth overall after laying down the third-best second run time in the field. Her combined run time was 1:44.29. Her UVM teammate
Stephanie Lebby finished right behind her in fifth with a two-run time of 1:44.55.
Moa Clementson was the Catamounts final scorer of the day, placing 13th with a two-run time of 1:45.84.
The Saint Michael's Carnival will conclude tomorrow with the men's and women's 5k Classic and the slalom races. Alpine races are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow while Nordic action has been pushed back to 11 a.m. for the men's race and 12:30 for the women's race due to the forecasted extreme morning temperatures.
