"The captains that our teams have selected are well-prepared for this critical role," said head coach Matt Belfield. "Most of them are new to formal positions in the program but have been leaders informally for years. So much of our success hinges upon the guidance they will provide away from our training sessions and competitions; and we expect that these captains will provide both a good example and a strong voice for the season ahead."
Stine returns as captain after a 2022 season in which he raced in four of Vermont's five races. Stine set an 8k personal best of 26:17.0 at the Lehigh Paul Short Run. Stine has also been featured on the America East Academic and Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Jensen returns for a second campaign with Vermont cross country. In 2022, Jensen ran to a 29th-place finish at the America East Championships. He also posted a career-best 8k time of 24:46.4 at the Paul Short Run. Jensen was a part of the 2022-23 Academic Honor Roll.
Cote rounds out the men's cross country leadership group as he returns for his junior season. Cote's sophomore campaign saw him run at the NCAA Northeast Regional. He set career bests in the 10k (32:55.9) and 8k (25:41.0) last season. Cote was also part of the America East Academic Honor Roll.
Cleary takes a leadership role after a junior campaign, that saw her compete in three of the Cats' five meets in 2022. She set a personal best mark in her final meet of the season at the Fall Foliage Invite. Cleary has been a member of the America East Academic Honor Roll and Commissioner's Honor Roll during her career.
Porth is the second member of the leadership team. Porth's rookie season in Burlington was capped by an America East All-Conference track & field performance in the rearranged 2020-21 season. Her 2021 cross country season saw her finish 31st in the America East Championships and 10th at the Fall Foliage Invitational. She is also a two-time member of the America East Academic Honor Roll.
Quade rounds out the women's cross country leadership team. Her first two seasons in Burlington saw her run to a 45th-place finish at the America East Championships in the rearranged 2020-21 season, and a 21st-place finish at the Vermont Invite in 2021.
The Catamounts open the season on Saturday, September 2, when they host the Vermont Invite at Hard'Ack Recreation Area in St. Albans.
