RUMFORD/NEWRY, ME. – First Year skiers
Kristin Maltun Helland and
Fin Bailey each secured their first career collegiate podiums on Friday afternoon in Rumford, Maine during the opening day of the EISA Carnival season. Both skiers finish second in their respective sprints as the Catamounts wrapped up the first day of the Bates Carnival in second place with 375.5 total points, 106 behind Dartmouth.
Marielle Ackermann also earned a final appearance and placed sixth for Vermont.

Day 1 Results
In the women's sprints the Catamounts had four skiers qualify for the quarterfinals - Helland, Ackermann,
Annie McColgan, and
Rose Horning. Helland and Ackermann were the top two fastest skiers out of qualifying, seeing Helland finish with the fastest time at 2:56.47 and Ackermann follow with a time of 2:57.74. Ackermann won her quarterfinal sprint outright while Helland advanced to the semifinals after placing second in her quarterfinal sprint. In the semifinal sprint, the skiers switched, seeing Helland win her semifinal sprint outright while Ackermann placed second in her semifinal sprint with a time of 2:58.13. In the final, Helland earned her first collegiate podium, finishing second with her fastest time of the day, 2:56.22. Middlebury's Quincy Massey-Bierman took the final victory, finishing with a time of 2:54.86.
In the men's sprints, five Catamounts earned quarterfinal berths – Bailey,
Finn Sweet,
Petter Bakken,
Benon Brattebo, and
Luke Rizio. Bailey posted the second-best time in the quarterfinal round, winning his quarterfinal sprint outright earning a 2:29.32 time. Brattebo was the other Catamount to make it to the semifinal round, advancing as a lucky loser. Bailey and Brattebo muscled their way past the semifinal sprint, seeing Bailey finish second with a 2:29.74 time and Brattebo finish third with a 2:30.17 time, each earning a position in the final sprint. Bailey earned his first collegiate podium finish skiing to second place with a time of 2:31.93 in the final sprint, just .45 away from first place, which went to Dartmouth's Luke Allan.
On the slopes at Black Mountain in Newry, ME,
Cydnie Timmermann skied the fastest time for the women on the alpine team, with a two-run time of 2:37.82, good for 15th, her first top 15 finish of the season. Sophomore
Magnus Berge Styren finished sixth for Vermont, the highest rank for alpine during day 1 for the Catamounts, earning a run time of 2:29.93, his first top 10 finish on the season.
Mackenzie Wood and
Felix Lindenmayer each raced their way into the top 20, seeing Wood finish 16th with a time of 2:31.44 and Lindenmayer place 19th with a total run time of 2:31.96. Middlebury's Bradshaw Underhill took first place for the men with a time of 2:28.58 while Dartmouth's Allie Resnick earned first place for the women with a time of 2:33.77.
The Bates Carnival wraps up tomorrow from Rumford and Newry Maine. The Nordic squads will compete in a 15km Freestyle Individual, the men will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the women at 12:30 p.m. The Alpine teams will duel in the first slalom competition of the year. First run will be the men, which is anticipated to begin at 9 a.m. followed by the women's first run at 10 a.m. The weekend will wrap up When the men ski their second run at 12:15 p.m. followed by the women's second run at 1:15 p.m.
