RUMFORD/NEWRY, ME. – Justine Clément and
Magnus Berge Styren delivered an impressive performance during day 2 of the Bates Carnival on Saturday afternoon from Black Mountain, seeing Clement win first place in the women's slalom while Styren placed second in the men's slalom. The Catamounts finished second overall in the Bates carnival with 781.5 total points, 22 points ahead of UNH. Dartmouth claimed the first carnival of the season with 956.5 points.

Vermont women's alpine placed the most points in the women's slalom on Saturday afternoon, seeing Clement finish in first place with a time of 1:44.65, earning her first podium of the season while
Cydnie Timmermann finished in sixth place with a time of 1:46.59 and
Moa Clementson finished in eighth place with a time of 1:46.79, both skiers securing their first top 10 finishes on the season.
For men's alpine, Styren secured his first podium finish on the season, placing second in the men's slalom finishing with a time of 1:43.31, just .19 below Dartmouth's Philip Lundquist who finished first.
Mackenzie Wood placed 12th in the men's slalom, his best finish on the season thus far, earning his second straight top 20 finish and first top 15 finish of the season.
In the Nordic races, competition was slightly changed from a 15km distance Freestyle to seven loops of the 1.3km course, adding up to a 9.1km distance Freestyle in total due to course conditions. For the men's 9.1km Freestyle race,
Luke Rizio skied the fastest time for Vermont, placing fourth with a time of 0:22:51.2, his first top five finish on the season.
Petter Bakken placed ninth with a time of 0:23:03.0, his first top 10 finish on the season.
Benon Brattebo and
Fin Bailey rounded out the top 20, finishing 17th and 18th, just one second apart from each other.
On the women's Nordic side of the 9.1km Freestyle, the Catamounts had two skiers finish in the top 10, seeing
Annie McColgan have her best finish of the year thus far, placing sixth with a time of 0:26:08.4. Following her podium finish in sprints during day one, Kristin Multun Helland wasn't far behind McColgan in the 9.1km Freestyle, placing eighth with a time of 0:26:25.4.
Greta Kilburn notched her first top 20 finish of the season, finishing in 19th with a time of 0:27:13.1.

Vermont will next compete in the St. Lawrence Carnival, spanning three consecutive days. Starting on Thursday (Jan. 16) the Alpine squads will be the only team competing, skiing from Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, NY in the GS race. On Friday (Jan. 17) Alpine will finish with the slalom race while Nordic begins their portion of the carnival in Lake Placid, NY on Mount Van Hoevenberg, competing in a 20k Freestyle mass start. The Nordic squads will wrap up the St. Lawrence carnival on Saturday (Jan. 18) competing in a 7.5k Classic interval start. Start times will be posted on UVMAthletics.com when available.
