LAST TIME AT SMC CARNIVAL
The 2023 Saint Michael's Carnival wrapped up with a dominant performance from UVM, securing their third carnival win of the 2023 season with 1,034 points, 266 ahead of second-place Middlebury.
Day 1 saw Haley Brewster and Ben Ogden shine in the 1.25k freestyle sprints. Brewster won the women's race with Waverly Gebhardt taking second, while Ogden claimed the men's title. UVM had a strong showing in qualifying, and Ogden's victory marked his third straight EISA win. UVM sat in second overall, just seven points behind Middlebury.
On Day 2, UVM dominated the 15k Classic races. Ogden won his fourth consecutive race, with Jacob Nystedt in second and Petter Bakken earning his first EISA podium in third. Gebhardt earned her first EISA victory in the women's race, with Brewster finishing third. Vermont moved into first overall in the carnival standings, leading Middlebury by 74 points.
Day 3 brought a snowy and sub-zero finish at Smugglers' Notch, where UVM swept the men's slalom podium with Cole Palchak earning his first EISA win and Declan McCormack finishing second. Moa Clementson and Caroline Jones went 1-2 in the women's slalom, with Clementson tying for first. With double team points on the line due to a postponed giant slalom, Vermont cemented their lead and closed out the carnival in commanding fashion.
In all, UVM's strong team effort across freestyle sprints, classic races, and slalom events propelled them to the top, with key performances from Ogden, Gebhardt, Brewster, and newcomers like Bakken and Timmerman adding depth to the team's success.
