HANOVER/LYME, N.H. - On Friday afternoon, the UVM Nordic and Alpine teams kicked off day one of the Dartmouth Carnival from Oak Hill and the Dartmouth Skiway. Both the men's and women's Nordic teams competed in the 7.5k CL Int. race while the Alpine squads raced the GS. For Nordic, both the men and women finished the day in first place overall, with the men's team accumulating 135 points after
Petter Bakken's first career EISA win and
Tabor Greenberg's fourth consecutive podium appearance. The women's team totaled 125 points led by
Haley Brewster placing second. On the Alpine slopes, both the men's and women's teams placed second on the day with standout performances from
Oskar Gillberg, who earned his first career EISA win, while
Cydnie Timmermann (second place) and
Gray Flanagan (third place) each secured a spot on the podium.

The women's Nordic skiers opened competition on day one and placed first, scoring 125 points overall, and seeing five of six racers placing in the top 20 of finishers. Brewster continues to place strongly for Vermont, finishing in second with a run time of 23:52.7 and earning 47 EISA points. This is Brewster's fourth podium placement in a row.
Kristin Maltun Helland was the next Catamount finisher, placing fourth with a run time of 24:15.0 and 41 EISA points, her best placement on the season thus far.
Lena Poduska finished sixth with a run time of 24:31.7 and earned 37 EISA points, her third straight time placing within the top eight finishers.

The men's Nordic team wrapped up day one of competition on the Nordic side in first place with 135 points, and six of eight skiers placing in the top ten of finishers. Bakken had a career best finish, notching his first career EISA victory with a run time of 21:12.0 and earning 50 EISA points. Greenberg placed third with a run time of 21:25.7 and 44 EISA points.
Fin Bailey,
Luke Rizio, and
Owen Young followed in fourth, fifth, and sixth with run times of 21:31.3, 21:32.5, and 21:37.0, respectively. Bailey also earned 41 crucial EISA points for the team.

The men's Alpine team totaled 118 points after day one and placed second. Gillberg shined for the Catamounts, placing first with a two-run time of 1:55.79, earning 50 EISA points and his first career EISA victory.
Gray Flanagan also landed on the podium with a two-run time of 1:56.42, placing him third and awarding him 44 EISA points, his first podium appearance of the season.
Magnus Berge Styren placed 18th with a two-run time of 1:58.51, earning 24 crucial EISA points for the team.

The women's Alpine team also placed second after day one with 103 points. Timmermann paved the way for Vermont with a two-run time of 2:01.00 and 47 EISA points, finishing in second, marking back-to-back podium appearances for the senior skier.
Sara Stiel placed 13th with a two-run time of 2:02.86, earning 30 EISA points.
Kendahl Roufa placed 19th with a two-run time of 2:03.62 and earned 26 crucial points for her team.

NEXT UP: The Catamounts will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 31) for day two of the Dartmouth Carnival from Oak Hill and Dartmouth Skiway. Saturday's events will be the 25k FR Mass start race for Nordic and the slalom for Alpine. Women's Nordic begins racing at 11 a.m. followed by the men's race at 1 p.m. On the Alpine side, start times will be announced on UVMAthletics.com and UVMSkiing social media once released (All times subject to change).
